Doctoral Programs

Welcome to Concordia University Chicago and thank you for your interest in applying to one of our doctoral programs. All documents relating to admission should be submitted to Concordia University’s Office of Graduate Admission and Student Services prior to the deadline for your anticipated term of enrollment. See your degree of interest on this Web site for application and file completion deadlines.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the doctoral program occurs prior to initiation of course work. The number of students admitted will be limited to ensure quality of program and dissertation advising.

Applicants who are successful in their application for admission for entrance into the doctoral program will meet the following criteria:

  • Master’s degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • A completed Doctoral Application for Admission
  • Submission of rationale statement, including personal goals for applying for admission to the program.
  • Transcripts: Submission of official transcripts of all previous credits.
  • Testing: Current Graduate Record Exam or Miller Analogies Test scores (test taken within the prior three years).
  • Letters of recommendation from two persons qualified to comment upon the applicant’s potential for doctoral study.
  • Past experience: At least two years of successful teaching/administrative experience (required only for doctoral programs in K-12 education).
  • Writing sample: Submit a paper that demonstrates your ability to write in a scholarly manner at a level typical of graduate work. A paper from your master’s program would be most appropriate. This sample should approach, but not exceed, five pages in length.

All documents should be submitted to:

Office of Graduate Admission and Student Services
Concordia University Chicago
7400 Augusta Street
River Forest, IL 60305

The office fax number is (708) 209-3454.

Once the admission file is completed and initially reviewed, qualified applicants will complete an extemporaneous writing sample followed by a personal interview with an admission committee.

Admission recommendations are submitted from the admission committee to the Dean of the College of Education, who will then make the final admission decision and communicate the decision to the candidate. The admission committee may establish an admission waiting list, if necessary. Students admitted should consult the Doctoral Program Handbook for additional program information.

Students who are applying for admission to the doctoral program are precluded from enrolling in any courses which met doctoral program requirements until the student has been completely admitted to the program.

The Graduate Admission Committee reserves the right to request additional information or documentation deemed helpful in evaluating applicants for admission.

Additional Testing

Depending on program of study, students may be required to take additional tests such as the Graduate Record Exam, Miller Analogies Test and/or the Illinois Basic Skills Test. A writing sample, essay, FBI fingerprint criminal background check, valid teaching certificate and/or interview may also be required to determine what may be necessary for a student to qualify for a graduate program.

Pending Status

Doctoral and international students are not eligible for Pending Status .

International Students

Applicants who are not U.S. citizens are required to meet all admission standards listed for the program they wish to enter. In addition, the following are required to be considered for admission:

  • TOEFL: A score of at least 550 (paper-based) or 72 (internet) minimum requirement on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or successful completion of Level 112 at an English Language School (ELS) unless English is the native language, and an unqualified recommendation from an ELS program director is provided. (International students who have earned an advanced degree from an accredited institution in the United States do not need to submit TOEFL scores.)
  • Transcripts: Official transcripts from each college/university attended showing all college/university course work with certified English translations of all transcripts originally prepared in any other language. Also, any international transcripts must be evaluated by a Concordia-approved international credentialing service such as WES (World Education Services), ECE (Educational Credential Evaluators), or AACRAO (American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers).
  • Financial Support: A certified document guaranteeing adequate financial support for at least the student’s first year of study and, barring any unforeseen circumstances, adequate funding from the same or an equally dependable source, for subsequent years.
  • Medical: A physical exam, adequate medical insurance, and proof of immunization are required prior to enrollment.
  • Regular Admission Requirements: International students must qualify for regular admission to a degree program in order to enroll.

All documents must be received by the Office of Graduate Admission and Enrollment Services at least three months prior to the expected date of entry. I-20 forms may be issued only after University acceptance is granted and will remain in effect only for students who continue to make satisfactory progress as full-time students in an accepted university program. The program length may vary for each student.

Online Master’s Degree Programs

Students often want to pursue advanced training in a field, but can find that life circumstances sometimes make it hard to act. Master’s degrees online may help with those hurdles and give students extra options in pursuing their education.

Seeking an Online Master’s Degree

According to the Council of Graduate School’s study, “Graduate Enrollment and Degrees: 2000 to 2010,” since 1999, graduate enrollments in the United States have increased nationally by an average of 3.7% annually. Today, an increasing number of these graduate programs, including master’s degree programs, are being offered online. Read More

Many companies and employees consider e-mail the lifeblood to work productivity. Our infographic takes aim at the issue and tries to help sort out some.

Studying for a Master s degree online

The question remains: Why pursue an advanced education through an online program?

Diverse choices. Not quite sure about your career path? Degree opportunities span the gamut of professional interests and disciplines, including areas such as the following:

Opportunity for better career earnings. According to 2011 research from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, individuals holding a master’s degree had higher median weekly earnings in 2011 than those possessing a bachelor’s degree.

  • Master’s degree. Median wages for those with a master’s degree were $1,263
  • Bachelor’s degree. Median wages for those with a master’s degree were $1,053

Indeed, while completing a master’s degree is no promise of increased earnings, doing so could lead to enhanced career focus and open new networking opportunities. It is important to remember that requirements and degree completion time varies by program — be sure to review program specifics before deciding on a school and area of study.

Why earn a master’s degree?

Attending graduate school is a calculated risk – a risk you should consider carefully before dusting off the backpack, pulling out the laptop and heading back to class. Prior to making a decision, be sure to weigh the pros and cons for completing a master’s degree and ask if the potential benefits of the degree outweigh the costs and time involved.

Before you enroll, you may want to consider these five things

  1. Not all degrees are created equal. First, you may want to consider the eventual earning power your future degree holds. Does an MBA hold more earning potential than a master’s in art history? Examine salary and educational trends in your prospective degree field before taking the plunge – does the value of the degree make it worth the cost?
  2. Consider the cost. Graduate school may be expensive. Period. Costs may vary by the school and program, the availability of financial aid and the length of the master’s program. However, be sure to factor in the opportunity cost, that is, the possible loss of employment income while you attend school.
  3. Private life vs. school balance. Do you have family and work responsibilities? Can you balance newly added pressures of graduate school and sustain your family and/or work life?
  4. Handling tuition. The breaking point for many future students is tuition. How will you pay for tuition? Are you prepared to assume debt by taking on student loans? Can you work while you attend school?
  5. Relocation is a possibility. After reviewing master’s degree programs, will you have to relocate? Is your ‘dream’ program located 2,000 miles across the country? Be sure to consider the school’s location before making a decision.

Four reasons to pursue a master’s degree

As you confront the various decision points about going back to school, there are four major reasons to make that decision – career choices, employment and earnings.

  1. Allows you to change direction. Ready for a change in careers or a new position within your current field? Studying for a master’s degree may allow you to change course on your career path, either pivoting into a new career field entirely or developing new managerial and deep skill sets that may allow you to move up in your current employment arena.
  2. Reveals skills and competency. Do those little letters after your name – MBA, MA, MS – really make a difference on your resume? They sure do. A master’s degree listed on your resume may not be just an ornament; it may also reflect newly defined skills and competency within your field of study.
  3. Increases earnings opportunities. The third, and probably most important, reason to pursue a master’s degree is the possibility of increasing career earnings. According to 2011 research from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, individuals possessing a master’s degree had higher weekly median earnings than those with only a bachelor’s degree. Median wages for individuals with master’s degrees were $1,263, while individuals with bachelor’s degrees were $1,053.
  4. Online programs may be an option. An increasing number of post baccalaureate degrees may be now available either entirely as online programs or with online course components. Online options may be diverse, master’s degrees may be found in everything from education to engineering, fine arts to business, nursing to social work. Choosing an online program may offer some flexibility and may allow you to keep from relocating to complete your degree.

Taking the time to weigh the pros of cons of a possible master’s degree program is important. Not only should you match the degree to your future career goals, but you should also consider the individual degree requirements and the amount of time necessary to complete the program, as they both vary by school and department.

As you make a decision, be sure to set realistic goals, do your homework and make a plan before settling on a master’s degree program.

Pursuing a master degree: Requirements for admission

There are four major graduate admissions tests that may be used for applicants applying to liberal arts and non-professional programs, law school, medical school and business school. Here is an overview of each of these exams.

GRE (Graduate Records Examinations). The GRE is the most widely accepted graduate admissions test required for admissions to graduate school and is usually taken by students applying to liberal arts and non-professional graduate programs. There are three components to the test: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and an analytical writing section. The analytical writing section consists of two parts: issue task and argument task. Scores range from 130 to 170.

GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test). If you’re applying to business school, you may be required to take the GMAT as part of your application process. There are four parts to the GMAT: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning and analytical writing. You may be given three and a half hours to take the test, and the total score may be from 200 to 800 points.

LSAT (Law School Admission Test). The LSAT is widely used by law schools in the admissions process. The exam includes sections on reading comprehension, analytical reasoning, logical reasoning and writing. While the writing portion of the exam is not scored, it is sent to the law schools to which the test taker has applied. Total LSAT scores customarily range from 120 to 180.

MCAT (Medical College Admission Test). This test is administered to medical school applicants. The four sections of the MCAT are physical sciences, verbal reasoning, biological sciences and writing. The writing portion is being phased out of this exam in 2013, with an unscored trial section taking its place. Raw scores may be converted to a scale of one to 15.

Preparatory materials may be available for all graduate exams and may include practice tests and study courses. Exam and master degree requirements may vary by degree program and institution, so you should check with your school of choice for its individual exam requirements.

Profiles in Leadership: Nancy Marcus Reflects on 30 Years of Research, Students and Service

When Nancy Marcus arrived at Florida State University in 1987, she didn’t have plans to stay very long.

Thirty years later, the oceanographer-turned-administrator has left an indelible mark at FSU — as a pioneer in her field, as a role model for women in STEM and as the dean of the Graduate School for the past 12 years.

“I love Florida State. I think I’ve contributed to it, but certainly Florida State has provided me with some wonderful opportunities,” Marcus said.

A native of the Northeast, Marcus pursued her undergraduate degree at Goucher College in Baltimore, Md. She studied biology and spent time in the marine field with stints at the Duke Marine Lab and the Bermuda Biological Station for Research.

“At the time, back in the late 1960s, the most likely path for women was to teach in the public schools,” Marcus said. “But when I went to visit one of my college friends who was doing that, I realized that wasn’t what I wanted to do.”

Marcus returned to school, heading to Yale University where she would earn both her master’s and doctoral degrees. She then completed post-doctoral work at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution on Cape Cod, Mass. eventually joining the facility’s scientific staff for the next 11 years until the opportunity arose to come to FSU.

“Florida seemed like a ways away from what I’d been familiar with,” Marcus said. “But I said, ‘Hey, I’ll give it five years and go somewhere else,’ and here I am, 30 years later.”

    MSW Programs

A Master of Social Work, or MSW, may be a good degree choice for those interested in helping others deal with a variety of life problems in a professional capacity. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), individuals with this degree often go on to become licensed clinical social workers, where they might work in settings like hospitals and clinics, private practices, state and local governments, and schools. Graduates of MSW programs often specialize in a specific area, such as child and family services, hospice and palliative care, mental health, and school social work.

    Why complete an MSW program?

The BLS reports that MSW programs may be particularly helpful when it comes to obtaining advanced job opportunities or working in some areas such as in schools or health care, and it s required to become a licensed clinical social worker. MSW degrees generally take two years to complete, depending on class scheduling and student aptitude, and require the completion of on-the-job experience through internships or field education before graduation (BLS.gov, 2012). Whether working with disabled veterans in a group home, or foster children in need of unique services, students who gain this supervised experience should slowly build their understanding of how to best accomplish their professional social work goals.

    MSW programs: What to expect?

General coursework in MSW programs might include research and practice, psychopathology, ethical foundations, child welfare and more. Some degree programs may offer concentrations such as child and family services, health services, and management and planning.

Upon completing their MSW, students can choose to pursue their Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) certification. Typically, the LCSW requires two years or 3,000 hours of supervised clinical hours beyond those already completed through an MSW program (BLS.gov, 2012). Other LCSW requirements could include passing a state-administered exam or one offered by the Association of Social Work Boards, and possibly having prior Licensed Social Worker (LSW) certification.

National career and salary outlook for social workers

The BLS projects employment for social workers could grow by up to 25 percent nationally between 2010 and 2020, which is better than the national average growth for all occupations (14 percent). Demand is predicted to be even higher in two social work fields: health care as well as mental health and substance abuse. According to the BLS, the national median salary in 2011 for child, family and school social workers was $40,680, with the top ten percent earning up to $70,050 in 2011 and the lowest 10 percent earning up to $26,190 nationally in 2011.

Those interested in learning more about the field, including new legislation, resources, and professional development, can look for further information through the American Clinical Social Work Association, the Association of Social Work Boards and the National Association of Social Workers. Detailed salary and employment data can be found through the BLS Occupational Employment Statistics program.

Fill out the fields below, and we will match you with a degree that suits your interests.

    Masters in Nursing Scholarships

Depending upon your financial situation, your GPA, and your skills, you may be able to pay for a substantial portion of your graduate education through scholarships. Scholarships differ from grants in that many scholarships demand that the student meet certain criteria to continue receiving funds.

    How to Get Started

Since scholarships become available throughout the year, you can set a recurring time in your schedule to research nursing school scholarships. Begin with the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), and then talk with your school s financial aid office to learn more about what is available to graduate students. The AACN (American Association of Colleges of Nursing) provides information about funds earmarked specifically for those who seek an advanced degree in nursing and the HRSA. or Health Resources and Services Administration, also offers information on basic, advanced and nurse faculty programs designed for education.

    Internships Externships

You might also explore internship and fellowship options, depending upon your future goals. Both opportunities are similar to scholarships in that they supply the nursing student with hands-on experience and may pay stipends during the time spent on the job or in conducting research. These opportunities can provide you with experience that provides insight into your advanced training and the experiences also can provide you with material for your master s thesis should you need one to graduate.

Receive Money from Nursing Associations and Societies

Often, specialty nursing groups can provide funds for advanced degrees to those individuals who show dedication to that field. For instance, the Oncology Nursing Society offers more than 70 college funding opportunities and $500,000 in available awards, scholarships and research grants for students who show a commitment to this specialty.

Additionally, you may want to think about joining the Honor Society of Nursing, or Sigma Theta Tau International. This organization recognizes nurses with Chapter Key Awards, International Awards and Regional Excellence Awards that are aligned with this honor society s mission and vision.

Featured Schools With Online Master’s in Nursing Degrees

Capella’s master’s degree in nursing gives you access to a wealth of new information and knowledge within the health care system. Their flexible program allows you to achieve your goals and advance your career by earning your msn degree online.

Earn your dual master’s degree in business and nursing, along with specialties in clinical care, education, family nurse practitioner, or nursing leadership at Grand Canyon University’s college of nursing and health sciences. Each course can provide you with the skills and techniques you need to become the best in your field.

Liberty University’s School of Nursing prepares students to become nurses who are committed to Christian ethical standards and view nursing as a ministry of caring based on the Patricia Benner’s theoretical framework.

Marriage Family Therapy Job Description: What You’ll Do

Learn about the many roles of a marriage and family therapist.

You may have heard the phrase, No man is an island. That especially rings true when families face trouble. Sometimes even the strongest family unit may need support and guidance in dealing with unexpected circumstances such as illness, death or unemployment. Other times, they may require that same support from an impartial observer in order to manage personal conflicts.

What does a marriage and family therapist do?

Marriage and family therapists offer guidance to couples, families and groups who are dealing with issues that affect their mental health and well-being. Many therapists approach their work holistically, using a wellness model (as opposed to an “illness” one) which highlights and encourages client’s strengths.

Some types of issues that marriage and family therapists treat include:

    • Child and adolescent behavioral problems
    • Grieving
    • Depression and anxiety
    • LGBTQ issues
    • Domestic violence
    • Infertility
    • Marital conflicts
    • Substance abuse

On the job, marriage and family therapists:

    • Observe how people interact within units
    • Evaluate and resolve relationship problems
    • Diagnose and treat psychological disorders within a family context
    • Guide clients through transitional crises such as divorce or death
    • Highlight problematic relational or behavioral patterns
    • Help replace dysfunctional behaviors with healthy alternatives

What education or certification will I need to become a marriage and family therapist?

Typically, earning an undergraduate degree in counseling, psychology, sociology or social work is the first step in becoming a marriage and family therapist. Then, you ll earn a master’s degree in counseling or marriage and family therapy.

You can pursue the necessary master’s degree with an undergraduate degree in another field. Your master’s will usually take one to two years to earn. Learn more about What You’ll Study .

Most states require that marriage and family therapists complete two years of post-graduate supervised work, totaling between 2,000 and 4,000 hours of clinical experience. In addition, counselors must pass a state-recognized exam and complete annual continuing education courses. The learning is never done—and your hard work will be rewarded with greater skills and understanding.

Licensing and certification guidelines for psychologists vary by state; be sure to check the guidelines for the region in which you plan to study.

What career paths can I take in marriage and family therapy?

As a marriage and family therapist, you can work in social service agencies, family services, outpatient mental health and substance abuse centers, hospitals, government, schools and even your own private practice. You can choose to work with a specific population, such as with teenagers, the incarcerated, families and the elderly. A parallel career path is mental health counseling, in which you can work with individuals in addition to groups, on many of the same issues.

If you d like to seek more education after earning your master s and working in the field of marriage and family therapy, you can pursue a doctoral degree in clinical psychology or one of its many specializations. This will require a time commitment of an additional five to seven years, and will broaden your employment opportunities to include academic research, consulting and more.

      Schools Offering Online Music Programs

Music degree holders often go on to pursue a career in education or performance arts. This degree can also be used to compose music or enable a person to work with studios and artists. While a bachelor’s degree is the minimum requirement for many jobs, a master’s degree can open opportunities and further your understanding of music theory and composition. The following is a list of some of the best online music degrees and related programs.

BS in Music Business BS in Music Production

Full Sail University The BS in Music Business degree at Full Sail University prepares graduates to enter the exciting world of the music business. The curriculum teaches the fundamentals of the business, including marketing, advertising, finance, intellectual property, artist and product management, publishing and distribution. For those students interested in the recording process, a BS in Production is also offered.

      MA in Worship/Ethnomusicology

Liberty University The Master of Arts in Worship/Ethnomusicology from Liberty University provides students a Christ-centered look at how music is an integral component of culture, worship, and society. The curriculum focuses on general principles of ethnomusicology, music in the Church, and music in missionary work. Graduates work as musicians, worship pastors, and music ministers.

An online music degree is quickly becoming a sought after degree for those who want to work in music or teach music. For those who have an informal background in music, this degree offers a formal certification that may open doors if you already work in the industry. Like many degrees that revolve around the arts, an online music degree only serves as a formality when applying for a job. It does not necessarily open doors when trying to get a job. There are a myriad of online music degrees offered through distance learning programs. Many are legitimate and require the same time commitment and lab hours as studying a conventional music program.

      Types of Online Music Degrees

      Songwriting Degree

A songwriting degree focuses on both music composition and lyrical songwriting. These are difficult classes in general, but become even more so when taken online. These courses are intended for someone who wishes to pursue a career conducting or creating music. The job opportunities that this degree can lead to are plentiful. Most songwriters have a hefty background in music composition and songwriting before entering a degree program. The majority of songwriting degrees do begin with music theory and basic introduction courses, so if you have no background in music whatsoever, a songwriting degree is still an option.

      Music Education Degree

With a music education degree, you typically go on to teach music in some capacity. Depending on the level of degree this is dictates what grade level of music you ll be able to teach. Music educators for elementary through high school only require a bachelors of arts in music education to qualify for teaching jobs. In addition to a music education degree, you must have be certified to teach in your respective state.

      Music History Degree

This gives you the opportunity to teach music or purse a higher degree. Music history is often studied along with music theory, though the two are not mutually exclusive. Music history teaches the history of music, typically focusing on major movements and how politics and culture influenced the music of the times. One may also purse a career in writing with a music history degree, either commentating or observing musical genres, artists or reviewing albums.

      Music Therapy Degree

This is one of the more limited music degrees available online. A music therapy degree allows you to work on music and how it helps heal people and cope with their problems. Though this is a difficult field to get started in, it is an industry that s set to grow in coming decades. Nearly all forms of art therapy are on the rise. There are opportunities to purse a bachelors, masters or doctorate in music therapy. Many with a music therapy degree go on to become licensed in their state to practice this therapy with patients. Music aiding mental illness dates back to the 17th century and is now works in conjunction with traditional mental health therapy.

      Music Production Degree

This degree revolves around bringing music to production. This is a behind-the-scenes job that producers or sound mixers may take to purse a job that involves working in a music studio. This is now this is a technology-driven degree and field and will stay that way. There are many music computer programs to learn when producing music of any sort and a music production degree shows you the ropes of those programs and how to bring ideas and sounds to fruition.

Career Options for Online Music Degree

      Music teacher

Many students with an online music degree go on to be music teachers. Music teachers are on a decline as budget cuts often force public schools to do away with music programs. In California, the number of music teachers has declined by 28% in the past few years. Unlike other teaching jobs, music teachers are often hired by a school and stay on board for decades, which means there aren t the same job opportunities as those for general educators.

      Private music tutor

This can be a great job if you reside in an affluent area or are willing to travel for students. Music educators with a background in piano, guitar, violin or the cello, can often make a living tutoring students privately. The rate varies from city to city, but in the suburbs you will often find parents who are willing to pay good money for their child to have a private music tutor hone their skills.

      Record producer

You may not end up creating Jay-Z s latest hit, but record producers are still able to find work. Most record producers work on a contract basis for a project. Even local or up-and-coming artists have to hire a producer to help cultivate their signature sound. This is a difficult job to break into, but it s all about networking and creating your own opportunities. An online music degree will ensure you re prepared to answer the call when opportunity knocks.

      Music teacher with a company

Instead of running your own private music lessons out of your home or office space, some music teachers are employed by a company that provides such services. This means you get a steady paycheck and do not deal with the marketing or networking to gain new students. You show up at work as anyone else does and teach music in a one-on-one lesson or small group class.

      Part-time band member

If you play an instrument, you may be able to gain employment working at a church or with a small band that entertains at events. This is almost always a part-time gig and may require a day job to pay the bills. Some artists do not work with an exclusive band, so if you network or already work in the music industry, you may be able to gain a long term, full-time gig playing an instrument. This may involve working in a studio or touring with an artist.

Usually, there are a number of discussion questions or problems due with each assignment that require you to answer and/or participate in class discussion. For example, your professor may ask you to express your views about the ethical aspects of a public policy. The professor expects each student to contribute their ideas in the conference room at their convenience by the due date and, where appropriate, to discuss alternative viewpoints with their classmates. Everyone participates! Read more about how online courses are administered for the Marist MBA.

Whether you are a fantasy golf fan looking for an edge or just want to know which players have the best chance of contending on Sunday, analytical trends and studying past performances can help you make smart decisions when it comes to making Masters picks.

The analytics gurus at 15th Club, the London-based consultancy group that helped Danny Willett create his plan to win the 2016 Masters, have studied all the shots hit by each player during the last two Masters. According to Jake Nichols, 15th Club s head of golf intelligence, the group has found some stats and qualities have proven to be predictive.

Phil Mickelson and Zach Johnson at the 2007 Masters.

You ve probably heard of them already.
One of the key traits turns out to be that Masters contenders are excellent players before they win. The average Official World Golf Ranking of the last 10 winners before they won at Augusta is 23.9, with the lowest-ranked player to win in the last 10 years being Zach Johnson, who ranked 56th in 2007 before his victory. The last five Masters winners had an average world ranking of 10.6 the week before they won. So while Augusta National Golf Club invites elite amateurs and the winners of qualifying events held around the world, the contenders are well-known, highly-ranked players. Nichols and 15th Club estimate elite players have a .3 strokes per round advantage beyond what they have in a typical event.

Rookies are not elite players, usually.
There has not been a player who won a Masters in his first appearance since Fuzzy Zoeller won in 1979, although Jordan Spieth was close in 2014. Inexperience playing at Augusta National certainly has a lot to do with that, but Nichols also pointed out that many first-timers who earn an invitation to the Masters are not elite players yet. For example, Brian Stuard is playing this week because he won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, but he is ranked No. 145 in the world, and Billy Hurley is in the field because he won last summer s Quicken Loans National, but he is ranked No. 137.

Jordan Spieth nearly defeated Bubba Watson to win as a Masters rookie in 2014. (Jack Gruber-USA TODAY Sports)

In contrast, Spieth was already ranked 13th when he almost won three years ago, so he fell within the average of the previous 10 years. It s worth noting that Jon Rahm is making his Masters debut this week, but he is already ranked No. 12 in the world, won at Torrey Pines in January and just lost to Dustin Johnson in the final of the WGC-Dell Match Play Championship. Rohm may be a Masters rookie, but he is not a typical rookie because he has established himself as an elite player.

      The home tour advantage.
Golfers who play primarily in the United States have also been found to get a similar .2 to .4 strokes per round edge at the Masters, according to 15th Club data.

This is not a Masters-specific thing. What I find, when we compare guys who go from the U.S. to Europe, or vice versa, is that they lose about an equal amount of strokes per round, Nichols said. It s not something that has to do with the style of the courses, but I think that s mostly because of travel.

Dustin Johnson leads the PGA Tour in Driving Distance with an average of 316.2 yards. (Michael Madrid-USA TODAY Sports)

      You were right, length helps.
Fans and pundits have assumed for years that golfers who are long off the tee fair better at Augusta than players who lack power. There is no rough at Augusta National, just a spin-reducing second cut, so the course rewards distance and does not punish missing the fairway like traditional venues used during U.S. Opens and PGA Championships. The stats validate this assumption and show big hitters fair about .3 shots per round better at the Masters than their standard score.

Golfers who have length off the tee also tend to be statistically dominant in strokes gained from long range in the fairway (250-300 yards), and they can attack par 5s more effectively than other players. Zach Johnson may have won the 2007 Masters while laying up on the par 5s, but it s important to remember that was an outlier event; the 2007 Masters was contested in unusually cold weather, and scores were high (Johnson won with a final score of 1 over). Nichols said golfers who are highly-ranked in strokes gained from 250-300 yards out (not a publically available PGA Tour stat) gain .15 strokes per round.

      Only marksmen need apply.
Golfers who excel at the Masters also tend to attack flagsticks.

You want guys who, with their iron play, don t just rely on getting the ball onto the green 30 feet from the hole, Nichols said. You want to look for guys who play more aggressive shots to get themselves close to the hole.

He gives these types of players a .15 strokes per round edge over the field.

This is an area where Spieth stands out. He s almost always been a guy whose greens in regulation numbers are not elite (although he ranks No. 1 on the PGA Tour in that category this season), but he hits it closer than a lot of other guys.

Justin Rose ranks 14th in average distance to the hole after a first putt (2 feet). (Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports)

      And then there is putting.
The greens at Augusta are legendary for their speed and undulation, as well as their velvety smoothness. While many players struggle to putt well at the Masters, Nichols and his colleagues found that winners and contenders tend to be especially good lag putters from 25-40 feet (.15 strokes per round advantage). While they might hole only a handful of putts from that range over four rounds, their good lag putting leaves easier tap-in pars and helps them avoid three-putting.

So, the stats say you should pick
When you add it all up, recent Masters history and analytics say that your ideal Masters picks should be big-hitting, highly-ranked players who compete primarily in the United States. You want players who can hit long-iron shots close and who are good lag putters. Dustin Johnson, Justin Rose, Sergio Garcia and J.B. Holmes are, therefore, smart selections. Jon Rahm and Jordan Spieth are also worth strong consideration, but you might want to shy aware from Jim Furyk, Ryan Moore, Russell Knox and Billy Hurley.

      Benefits of International Trade #masters #international #trade

      #

      Benefits of International Trade

International trade has flourished over the years due to the many benefits it has offered to different countries across the globe. International trade is the exchange of services, goods, and capital among various countries and regions, without much hindrance. The international trade accounts for a good part of a country s gross domestic product. It is also one of important sources of revenue for a developing country.

With the help of modern production techniques, highly advanced transportation systems, transnational corporations, outsourcing of manufacturing and services, and rapid industrialization, the international trade system is growing and spreading very fast.

International trade among different countries is not a new a concept. History suggests that in the past there where several instances of international trade. Traders used to transport silk, and spices through the Silk Route in the 14th and 15th century. In the 1700s fast sailing ships called Clippers, with special crew, used to transport tea from China, and spices from Dutch East Indies to different European countries.

The economic, political, and social significance of international trade has been theorized in the Industrial Age. The rise in the international trade is essential for the growth of globalization. The restrictions to international trade would limit the nations to the services and goods produced within its territories, and they would lose out on the valuable revenue from the global trade.

The benefits of international trade have been the major drivers of growth for the last half of the 20th century. Nations with strong international trade have become prosperous and have the power to control the world economy. The global trade can become one of the major contributors to the reduction of poverty.

David Ricardo, a classical economist, in his principle of comparative advantage explained how trade can benefit all parties such as individuals, companies, and countries involved in it, as long as goods are produced with different relative costs. The net benefits from such activity are called gains from trade. This is one of the most important concepts in international trade.

Adam Smith, another classical economist, with the use of principle of absolute advantage demonstrated that a country could benefit from trade, if it has the least absolute cost of production of goods, i.e. per unit input yields a higher volume of output.

According to the principle of comparative advantage, benefits of trade are dependent on the opportunity cost of production. The opportunity cost of production of goods is the amount of production of one good reduced, to increase production of another good by one unit. A country with no absolute advantage in any product, i.e. the country is not the most competent producer for any goods, can still be benefited from focusing on export of goods for which it has the least opportunity cost of production.

Benefits of International Trade can be reaped further, if there is a considerable decrease in barriers to trade in agriculture and manufactured goods.

Some important benefits of International Trade

      • Enhances the domestic competitiveness
      • Takes advantage of international trade technology
      • Increase sales and profits
      • Extend sales potential of the existing products
      • Maintain cost competitiveness in your domestic market
      • Enhance potential for expansion of your business
      • Gains a global market share
      • Reduce dependence on existing markets
      • Stabilize seasonal market fluctuations

Master of Science in Regulatory Affairs for Drugs, Biologics, and Medical Devices

      Overview

Ever-changing laws and regulations are driving demand for regulatory affairs professionals who can help companies effectively bring medical products to market. To prepare you to effectively manage regulatory activities, Northeastern University’s College of Professional Studies offers the Master of Science in Regulatory Affairs for Drugs, Biologics, and Medical Devices .

This unique graduate degree is designed to deepen your understanding of current regulations and their practical application in the development and commercialization of drugs, biologics, and medical device products. Regulatory affairs courses within this program will provide you with the integrated knowledge and broad perspectives you need to effectively manage the regulatory process. From discovery to commercialization, this regulatory affairs master’s degree will cover the steps that are required to bring a medical product to market, both in the U.S. and around the globe.

Northeastern’s MS in Regulatory Affairs for Drugs, Biologics, and Medical Devices offers students the opportunity to meet their career goals in the fields of regulatory affairs — such as operational and strategic regulatory affairs, clinical regulatory affairs, and regulatory compliance — by focusing their education in one of six unique concentrations that span the entire discipline. Concentration offerings include:

      Program Objectives

      • Gain the essential knowledge and skills required to help companies navigate an increasingly complex regulatory environment
      • Acquire the foundation necessary to work within a variety of fields, including medical product development, pharmaceutical sales, strategic marketing, and clinical investigations
      • Examine every step of the drug development and regulation process
      • Sharpen your understanding of the laws that govern the development, manufacturing, and commercial distribution of drugs, biologics, and medical devices
      • Analyze how emerging developments and trends are reshaping medical device regulations

      Career Outlook

Generally speaking, the pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing industry is not highly sensitive to changes in economic conditions—consistently experiencing growth in both jobs and profits. Because they are relied upon to get new drugs and devices tested, approved, and put on the market, regulatory affairs specialists are continually in demand. While employment prospects are bright across the field, regulatory affairs professionals with the most education are likely to enjoy the most opportunities and highest pay.

      #

Is A Web Design Degree Worth It?

A web design degree is a study program that leads to a professional academic accreditation. It is a necessary degree for showing proficiency in the creation of computer graphics, content and sometimes animation, that is meant to entertain, inform, enlighten or sell a product or service. Web design is a marriage between artistic ability, creative thinking and computer science.

Those interested in a web design degree must master code programs to properly format and add content pages for websites, which is the main resource for internet marketing. Typical courses for web design include web development, HTML application, graphic design, writing internet text and having a thorough knowledge of computer networks and systems. Web design requires the ability to interpret ideas and concepts then apply them, using basic knowledge mixed with an independently creative mindset.

Several degree programs are available, starting with a certificate program, then graduating to more intense study with associate and bachelor programs. Graduates of such programs can advance their training and skills by entering and completing a master s degree. Any program completion offers corresponding career paths. A web design degree attracts people with artistically creative personalities who can manage their own hours, meet deadlines and serve as their own production manager.

Pros and Cons of Getting a Web Design Degree

The pros of pursuing web design are many. Because of the nature of the job, many choose to go into this field so they can work independently and freelancing is one of the the most popular reasons for pursuing the vocation. It allows the designer to work when they want to and take on projects that reside within their skill sets. The hours are flexible and up to the designer, with headquarters typically in a small private office or in the home setting. Working from home allows production schedules that can start right away, with no transportation needed to an outside job site. A computer and Internet capability is all that is needed to start the business. Clients can originate from different time zones all over the world, extending the business reach and maximizing opportunities for employment. Time clocks, strict managers and dress codes are nearly non-existent, unless employment is with a corporate firm or business. Any expenses related to the job, such as stationery, computer software and hardware, office supplies and furniture, training fees or instructional material can be written off as expenses. The variety and amount of projects is entirely up to the freelance web designer. They need not be bored or stuck on one project when they have several to choose from or trade off to.

However, someone considering a freelance web design career must consider the potential pitfalls as well. A freelancer in web design must garner their own work and meet normal household expenses if they are the sole provider. This requires active job hunting on the internet, quality networking or through advertising media. It is possible that very little work will exist during some times of the year or even seasonally. A freelancer will need a sound disciplinary foundation and a willingness to put forth the effort to stay busy at the present and have the foresight to plan for the future. They will need to meet deadlines and abide by the client s instruction without forcing their own preferences into the production. A growing client list is essential to keep the workload coming in for a steady paycheck. Working at home or a small office as a self-employed freelancer usually means no insurance or that outside insurance coverage will have to be purchased. Likewise, software and hardware purchases are borne by the freelancer and this includes breakdowns or system failures. Freelancers might face constant interruptions from friends or family members, disrupting the work schedule.

Courses for web design degrees are available from colleges or online training schools. Baker College, an online school, awards an Associate of Applied Science degree and actively finds employment for its graduates, who can be placed as web managers, web designers or web developers. Baker also has contacts in the public sectors or government departments. The American InterContinental University is another online program that offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. They offer courses in digital graphics, web design, animation, Java script, computer science and programming languages.

So: Is a Web Design Degree Worth It?

Internet web design is a fascinating, ever-growing and changing industry. Today with the proliferation of Internet-based products and services offered by corporations and businesses, the chances of success are outstanding. New innovations in computer technology mean that computer graphics and design will forge ahead and create new specialized areas. Considering that the median salary for a senior web designer with a bachelor s degree in web design is $80,176, it s easy to see that a web design degree is worth it.

Top 7 Master’s Degrees for Making the Most Money

With the cost to attend graduate school being more than any 20-something can realistically afford, students, educators and employers are beginning to debate the necessity of a Master’s degree. At a Council for Graduate Schools’ conference held late last year, “attendees. said it is unethical to keep admitting students to programs and training them for jobs that don’t exist while they are racking up piles of debt,” and upon graduation their fate may lead to becoming an adjunct at a university, a low-wage job that doesn’t require a graduate degree, or ending up on food stamps. Nonetheless, here is a list of Master’s degrees which have proven to be lucrative and which will almost certainly guarantee success in the fields to which they lead.

      1. MBA (Master’s in Business Administration)

Investopedia lists an MBA as a highly flexible degree, meaning that students who obtain one will acquire skills that would help them succeed in most fields, such as business, finance and accounting. Due to their popularity, they can be completed online or by attending school part-time for less than $10,000. According to salary.com, the average salary for a management position is $105,000 and for a CEO position is $1,352,000. However, a Forbes article on the best and worst Master’s degrees believes there is a poor job outlook for the MBA circuit, but doesn’t state why. David Orozco, MBA Program Director at Florida State University, said:

Research has shown that an investment in an MBA pays off over the long-term. Additionally, our MBA Program at Florida State University is particularly appealing since we have an excellent placement rate at leading companies doing business in Florida such as Accenture, Gartner, CSX, Harris Corporation, ESPN, E Y, KPMG and Deutsche Bank. These top corporations offer excellent starting salaries and benefits packages.

Luckily for med students, America will always need doctors. It’s important to note the daunting length of the academic path to obtaining a medical doctorate — beyond three to four years of post-graduate study, the student must complete a residency program lasting as long as seven years. However, Investopedia suggests that the pay-offs are not only in a median annual salary of $180,000 (private practices earn even more) but also in the personal gratification of saving lives. If becoming a doctor doesn’t seem feasible or appealing, become a physician assistant — Forbes indicates that far less time and money is required of a PA student than of a medical student, and a PA can still earn a six-figure salary and practice medicine under the direction of a physician.

There are many areas of specialization in the field of engineering, and most of them appear to be lucrative. For instance, monster.com ‘s list of the top 10 best-paying Master’s degrees includes a Master’s in electrical engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering and civil engineering. In fact, a Master’s in electrical engineering tops their list, promising a median salary of $121,000.

Technology is a booming industry with a constant growth rate. An NBC News article suggests that projected employment for the industry is predicted to increase by 27 percent. The opportunities for employment in computer science include database administrator, software architect, IT consultant and more. By mid-career, this degree would earn graduates a salary of about $111,000. Dr. Robert van Engelen, Chair of FSU’s Department of Computer Science, foresees a bright future in the field. “For the long-term potential, computer science has always been at the top,” he said, largely for its practical applications.

If you’re looking for earning potential then going in the direction of software engineer or software architect, especially at the graduate level, is the degree with the most earning potential at this point.

He also noted that the government is looking for 4,000 cyber security specialists, and there is great earning potential in this area due to the shortage of applicants to fill these positions.

NBC News found this degree worth noting, and perhaps it’s because there is a nation-wide shortage of nurse anesthetists, who aid doctors, dentists and obstetricians in procedures requiring anesthesia. Since no one seems to want this job, pay averages out at about $120,000 annually.

Monster.com rates a Master’s in economics at number four, bringing in a median pay of $114,000. Dr. Stefan Norrbin, Director of FSU’s Applied Master’s Program in Economics, believes economics is a lucrative option because it’s an analytical degree. “Our Master’s students deal with big data sets, and big data has become hot in recent times. Lots of companies have lots of data but not much knowledge about what to do with it,” he said. “We’re actually training analysts. They’re not real economists that come out of a Master’s program. But that’s exactly what the employers want; they want somebody who can think and process data at the same time.”

Physics is a growing field with job opportunities expected to rise in the coming years, according to Forbes. “Unlike many of the other physical sciences, physics is one that transitions nicely from a lab to a big data world,” said Katie Bardaro, a lead economist with Payscale quoted in the article. “The computations and technical tools utilized in a physics program are highly useful in the growing world of data science.” The average salary for these degree holders is about $115,000.

It seems that pursuing a graduate degree in fields that lead to specific positions rather than a plethora of options, like English or music for instance, is more likely to guarantee a high-paying job capable of covering the costs of obtaining the degree.

      Choosing An Employer

With the consulting regime conquering the IT scenario, many OPT (Optional Practical Training) employers are in the fray to make a quick buck. So one needs (especially OPT students) to be very cautious and careful while choosing an OPT employer or OPT work. Having a good employer is very vital so as to avoid any legal, payments, and immigration issues in the future and of coz getting work assignments at reputed companies by not being on bench for too long.

Before you set about stumbling upon an OPT employer, one needs to ascertain what his/her short-term goals are. Is it huge pay / getting placed soon. Many OPT employers entice employees with good % billing rates. One should never fall into such kind of traps especially when you are starting your career in consulting. The following are the important features one needs to consider when he/she chooses an employer:

      My Job Search Process

As an OPT (Optional Practical Training) International Student, I had been in the same shoes are you were few years ago. I graduated from Chemical engineering from Bangalore University. I saw the trend was to start reading GRE and Toefl and plan to go to USA. Well since the job market in India was not that great, so thought why not follow the trend. Landed in US and joined master’s program in Computer Science. With 9/11 and bad economy, there were no chances of funding or even getting on-campus jobs. Somehow my luck favored and I got my first on campus job in few months. Then got my Assistantship, then my Internship and was ready to graduate.

Job market was still worse. More then job market I didn’t have a mentor to guide me through the OPT/CPT job search process. My friends were in the same boat as I was.

OPT Student Switching from Non IT to IT

Well that’s a tough one…For OPT Students in the conventional majors and who bagged the OPT Jobs in their fields of study…its not at all concern for them to think about this shift at least for the time being. However this thought might arise in them once they settle down in their job and start feeling the ennui about their daily routine due to the lack of freshness or adventure. Also the lure of big pay packets is one main thing that attracts them to IT. Along with these there might be Junta who is really interested in programming stuff, web designing, has the curiosity to learn more about the business side, about finance and IT integration etc which lures them into the IT sector.

There are many OPT Students who couldn’t grab/take the OPT Jobs in their major of study due to various reasons such as economical downturn, H1 cap reached by the time they got their job etc.
