Welcome to Concordia University Chicago and thank you for your interest in applying to one of our doctoral programs. All documents relating to admission should be submitted to Concordia University’s Office of Graduate Admission and Student Services prior to the deadline for your anticipated term of enrollment. See your degree of interest on this Web site for application and file completion deadlines.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the doctoral program occurs prior to initiation of course work. The number of students admitted will be limited to ensure quality of program and dissertation advising.

Applicants who are successful in their application for admission for entrance into the doctoral program will meet the following criteria:

  • Master’s degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • A completed Doctoral Application for Admission
  • Submission of rationale statement, including personal goals for applying for admission to the program.
  • Transcripts: Submission of official transcripts of all previous credits.
  • Testing: Current Graduate Record Exam or Miller Analogies Test scores (test taken within the prior three years).
  • Letters of recommendation from two persons qualified to comment upon the applicant’s potential for doctoral study.
  • Past experience: At least two years of successful teaching/administrative experience (required only for doctoral programs in K-12 education).
  • Writing sample: Submit a paper that demonstrates your ability to write in a scholarly manner at a level typical of graduate work. A paper from your master’s program would be most appropriate. This sample should approach, but not exceed, five pages in length.

Once the admission file is completed and initially reviewed, qualified applicants will complete an extemporaneous writing sample followed by a personal interview with an admission committee.

Admission recommendations are submitted from the admission committee to the Dean of the College of Education, who will then make the final admission decision and communicate the decision to the candidate. The admission committee may establish an admission waiting list, if necessary. Students admitted should consult the Doctoral Program Handbook for additional program information.

Students who are applying for admission to the doctoral program are precluded from enrolling in any courses which met doctoral program requirements until the student has been completely admitted to the program.

The Graduate Admission Committee reserves the right to request additional information or documentation deemed helpful in evaluating applicants for admission.

Additional Testing

Depending on program of study, students may be required to take additional tests such as the Graduate Record Exam, Miller Analogies Test and/or the Illinois Basic Skills Test. A writing sample, essay, FBI fingerprint criminal background check, valid teaching certificate and/or interview may also be required to determine what may be necessary for a student to qualify for a graduate program.

Pending Status

Doctoral and international students are not eligible for Pending Status .

International Students

Applicants who are not U.S. citizens are required to meet all admission standards listed for the program they wish to enter. In addition, the following are required to be considered for admission:

  • TOEFL: A score of at least 550 (paper-based) or 72 (internet) minimum requirement on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or successful completion of Level 112 at an English Language School (ELS) unless English is the native language, and an unqualified recommendation from an ELS program director is provided. (International students who have earned an advanced degree from an accredited institution in the United States do not need to submit TOEFL scores.)
  • Transcripts: Official transcripts from each college/university attended showing all college/university course work with certified English translations of all transcripts originally prepared in any other language. Also, any international transcripts must be evaluated by a Concordia-approved international credentialing service such as WES (World Education Services), ECE (Educational Credential Evaluators), or AACRAO (American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers).
  • Financial Support: A certified document guaranteeing adequate financial support for at least the student’s first year of study and, barring any unforeseen circumstances, adequate funding from the same or an equally dependable source, for subsequent years.
  • Medical: A physical exam, adequate medical insurance, and proof of immunization are required prior to enrollment.
  • Regular Admission Requirements: International students must qualify for regular admission to a degree program in order to enroll.

All documents must be received by the Office of Graduate Admission and Enrollment Services at least three months prior to the expected date of entry. I-20 forms may be issued only after University acceptance is granted and will remain in effect only for students who continue to make satisfactory progress as full-time students in an accepted university program. The program length may vary for each student.

Studying for a Master s degree online

The question remains: Why pursue an advanced education through an online program?

Diverse choices. Not quite sure about your career path? Degree opportunities span the gamut of professional interests and disciplines, including areas such as the following:

Opportunity for better career earnings. According to 2011 research from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, individuals holding a master’s degree had higher median weekly earnings in 2011 than those possessing a bachelor’s degree.

  • Master’s degree. Median wages for those with a master’s degree were $1,263
  • Bachelor’s degree. Median wages for those with a master’s degree were $1,053

Indeed, while completing a master’s degree is no promise of increased earnings, doing so could lead to enhanced career focus and open new networking opportunities. It is important to remember that requirements and degree completion time varies by program — be sure to review program specifics before deciding on a school and area of study.

Why earn a master’s degree?

Attending graduate school is a calculated risk – a risk you should consider carefully before dusting off the backpack, pulling out the laptop and heading back to class. Prior to making a decision, be sure to weigh the pros and cons for completing a master’s degree and ask if the potential benefits of the degree outweigh the costs and time involved.

Before you enroll, you may want to consider these five things

  1. Not all degrees are created equal. First, you may want to consider the eventual earning power your future degree holds. Does an MBA hold more earning potential than a master’s in art history? Examine salary and educational trends in your prospective degree field before taking the plunge – does the value of the degree make it worth the cost?
  2. Consider the cost. Graduate school may be expensive. Period. Costs may vary by the school and program, the availability of financial aid and the length of the master’s program. However, be sure to factor in the opportunity cost, that is, the possible loss of employment income while you attend school.
  3. Private life vs. school balance. Do you have family and work responsibilities? Can you balance newly added pressures of graduate school and sustain your family and/or work life?
  4. Handling tuition. The breaking point for many future students is tuition. How will you pay for tuition? Are you prepared to assume debt by taking on student loans? Can you work while you attend school?
  5. Relocation is a possibility. After reviewing master’s degree programs, will you have to relocate? Is your ‘dream’ program located 2,000 miles across the country? Be sure to consider the school’s location before making a decision.

Four reasons to pursue a master’s degree

As you confront the various decision points about going back to school, there are four major reasons to make that decision – career choices, employment and earnings.

  1. Allows you to change direction. Ready for a change in careers or a new position within your current field? Studying for a master’s degree may allow you to change course on your career path, either pivoting into a new career field entirely or developing new managerial and deep skill sets that may allow you to move up in your current employment arena.
  2. Reveals skills and competency. Do those little letters after your name – MBA, MA, MS – really make a difference on your resume? They sure do. A master’s degree listed on your resume may not be just an ornament; it may also reflect newly defined skills and competency within your field of study.
  3. Increases earnings opportunities. The third, and probably most important, reason to pursue a master’s degree is the possibility of increasing career earnings. According to 2011 research from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, individuals possessing a master’s degree had higher weekly median earnings than those with only a bachelor’s degree. Median wages for individuals with master’s degrees were $1,263, while individuals with bachelor’s degrees were $1,053.
  4. Online programs may be an option. An increasing number of post baccalaureate degrees may be now available either entirely as online programs or with online course components. Online options may be diverse, master’s degrees may be found in everything from education to engineering, fine arts to business, nursing to social work. Choosing an online program may offer some flexibility and may allow you to keep from relocating to complete your degree.

Taking the time to weigh the pros of cons of a possible master’s degree program is important. Not only should you match the degree to your future career goals, but you should also consider the individual degree requirements and the amount of time necessary to complete the program, as they both vary by school and department.

As you make a decision, be sure to set realistic goals, do your homework and make a plan before settling on a master’s degree program.

Pursuing a master degree: Requirements for admission

There are four major graduate admissions tests that may be used for applicants applying to liberal arts and non-professional programs, law school, medical school and business school. Here is an overview of each of these exams.

GRE (Graduate Records Examinations). The GRE is the most widely accepted graduate admissions test required for admissions to graduate school and is usually taken by students applying to liberal arts and non-professional graduate programs. There are three components to the test: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and an analytical writing section. The analytical writing section consists of two parts: issue task and argument task. Scores range from 130 to 170.

GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test). If you’re applying to business school, you may be required to take the GMAT as part of your application process. There are four parts to the GMAT: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning and analytical writing. You may be given three and a half hours to take the test, and the total score may be from 200 to 800 points.

LSAT (Law School Admission Test). The LSAT is widely used by law schools in the admissions process. The exam includes sections on reading comprehension, analytical reasoning, logical reasoning and writing. While the writing portion of the exam is not scored, it is sent to the law schools to which the test taker has applied. Total LSAT scores customarily range from 120 to 180.

MCAT (Medical College Admission Test). This test is administered to medical school applicants. The four sections of the MCAT are physical sciences, verbal reasoning, biological sciences and writing. The writing portion is being phased out of this exam in 2013, with an unscored trial section taking its place. Raw scores may be converted to a scale of one to 15.

Preparatory materials may be available for all graduate exams and may include practice tests and study courses. Exam and master degree requirements may vary by degree program and institution, so you should check with your school of choice for its individual exam requirements.

    FSU Day in the Capital

    The Florida capitol rocked garnet and gold during FSU Day at the Capitol.

    Florida State University celebrated its status as a preeminent Florida university and all things garnet and gold during FSU Day at the Capitol from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2.

    Several of the university’s colleges and academic departments set up information tables on the first three floors of the Capitol throughout the event. The highlight of the day was an outdoor pep rally from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the plaza between the old and new Capitols. It featured remarks by President John Thrasher, recognition of FSU alumni serving in the Legislature and performances by the FSU Cheerleaders, members of the Flying High Circus and Seminole Sound, a pep band from the College of Music.

    Thank you to everyone who took time out of their busy schedules to share the accomplishments of their departments and programs with the legislative community, and to the volunteers who helped make this special day possible.     Profiles in Leadership: Nancy Marcus Reflects on 30 Years of Research, Students and Service

    When Nancy Marcus arrived at Florida State University in 1987, she didn’t have plans to stay very long.

    Thirty years later, the oceanographer-turned-administrator has left an indelible mark at FSU — as a pioneer in her field, as a role model for women in STEM and as the dean of the Graduate School for the past 12 years.

    “I love Florida State. I think I’ve contributed to it, but certainly Florida State has provided me with some wonderful opportunities,” Marcus said.

    A native of the Northeast, Marcus pursued her undergraduate degree at Goucher College in Baltimore, Md. She studied biology and spent time in the marine field with stints at the Duke Marine Lab and the Bermuda Biological Station for Research.

    “At the time, back in the late 1960s, the most likely path for women was to teach in the public schools,” Marcus said. “But when I went to visit one of my college friends who was doing that, I realized that wasn’t what I wanted to do.”

    Marcus returned to school, heading to Yale University where she would earn both her master’s and doctoral degrees. She then completed post-doctoral work at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution on Cape Cod, Mass. eventually joining the facility’s scientific staff for the next 11 years until the opportunity arose to come to FSU.

    “Florida seemed like a ways away from what I’d been familiar with,” Marcus said. “But I said, ‘Hey, I’ll give it five years and go somewhere else,’ and here I am, 30 years later.”

    MSW Programs

    A Master of Social Work, or MSW, may be a good degree choice for those interested in helping others deal with a variety of life problems in a professional capacity. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), individuals with this degree often go on to become licensed clinical social workers, where they might work in settings like hospitals and clinics, private practices, state and local governments, and schools. Graduates of MSW programs often specialize in a specific area, such as child and family services, hospice and palliative care, mental health, and school social work.

    Why complete an MSW program?

    The BLS reports that MSW programs may be particularly helpful when it comes to obtaining advanced job opportunities or working in some areas such as in schools or health care, and it s required to become a licensed clinical social worker. MSW degrees generally take two years to complete, depending on class scheduling and student aptitude, and require the completion of on-the-job experience through internships or field education before graduation (BLS.gov, 2012). Whether working with disabled veterans in a group home, or foster children in need of unique services, students who gain this supervised experience should slowly build their understanding of how to best accomplish their professional social work goals.

    MSW programs: What to expect?

    General coursework in MSW programs might include research and practice, psychopathology, ethical foundations, child welfare and more. Some degree programs may offer concentrations such as child and family services, health services, and management and planning.

    Upon completing their MSW, students can choose to pursue their Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) certification. Typically, the LCSW requires two years or 3,000 hours of supervised clinical hours beyond those already completed through an MSW program (BLS.gov, 2012). Other LCSW requirements could include passing a state-administered exam or one offered by the Association of Social Work Boards, and possibly having prior Licensed Social Worker (LSW) certification.

    National career and salary outlook for social workers

    The BLS projects employment for social workers could grow by up to 25 percent nationally between 2010 and 2020, which is better than the national average growth for all occupations (14 percent). Demand is predicted to be even higher in two social work fields: health care as well as mental health and substance abuse. According to the BLS, the national median salary in 2011 for child, family and school social workers was $40,680, with the top ten percent earning up to $70,050 in 2011 and the lowest 10 percent earning up to $26,190 nationally in 2011.
