      Job Outlook

      Employment opportunities for criminal justice and law enforcement professionals are expected to grow as fast as the average for all U.S. occupations over the next decade. Jobs will be most plentiful for those professionals who hold a master’s degree in a discipline with direct industry application. Local, state and federal law enforcement agencies will be looking for individuals with advanced skills and training in computer science, forensics, psychology, cybercrimes, accounting, finance and foreign languages. Earning a master’s or Phd will set job seekers apart from other candidates. Most entry-level positions will require a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited higher education institution.

      Between 2012 and 2022 job growth will average roughly 12% per year for all protect service, law enforcement and criminal justice occupations. By the year 2020, the number of surgical tech employees is estimated to increase to over 110,000. This is a 19% increase, which is noted as being about the average rate of growth.

      However, it should also be noted that the average growth rating, according to The Bureau of Labor Statistics is 10 to 19%, so their expected job growth for surgical techs is just one percent away from being considered above average. The reason for the expected growth is the baby boomer generation aging, which will likely result in more patients requiring surgery as a result of their aging health.

      People should also keep in mind that the job growth for other industries may actually decrease, which makes this field an even better career choice. The growth predictions are all estimates, and some specific certifications of surgical techs are expected to beat this prediction and others may fall a little short.

      Becoming a Paralegal in Connecticut – CT

      Paralegals are an integral part of the Connecticut legal community, as evidenced by the Connecticut Bar Association’s Paralegals Committee and the three paralegal associations that exist within a geographically small state. In fact, some 4,560 Connecticut residents were working as paralegals in 2010, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

      While Connecticut’s lawmakers have considered regulating notaries and other paraprofessionals in the legal field, there are no current requirements for paralegals to be trained in a standard manner. As in other states, paralegals must work under the supervision of a lawyer who assumes responsibility for their professional conduct. Lawyers are formally encouraged by state rules to support paralegals in obtaining continuing education.

      *Accredited online paralegal and legal studies programs put an associate’s, bachelor’s or master’s degree well within reach:

      Aspiring paralegals in Connecticut may pursue a career as a paralegal through several means: finding employment that provides on-the-job training or completing educational coursework, such as a certificate program, an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree.

      As the profession of the paralegal continues to gain prominence, many job seekers find that preference is given to candidates who have obtained formal education in paralegal studies. For this reason, aspiring paralegals may opt for an associate’s, bachelor’s, or even master’s degree in paralegal studies. If an aspiring paralegal already holds a bachelor’s degree in another field or needs to enter the job market quickly, that person may opt for a certificate program, which does not confer a degree but does give an educational edge.

      Is There Paralegal Certification in Connecticut?

      While the words “certificated paralegal” and “certified paralegal” are often used interchangeably, they describe two different things. If an employer requests a “certified” or “certificated” paralegal, the job candidate should clarify with the potential employer which level of training the employer truly desires.

      Certificated paralegals have earned a certificate in paralegal studies by completing an educational program. Often, people who already hold a bachelor’s degree in another subject will return to school for post-baccalaureate education in paralegal studies. Upon completing such a program they earn a certificate, but not a second degree. Some certificate programs admit students with no previous degree and issue a stand-alone certificate. Not all certificate programs are recognized by the American Bar Association (ABA) and neither are they all accredited. Thus it is important to research certificate-issuing schools to ensure that they will provide a certificate that will be useful in gaining future employment.

      Certified paralegals have prepared for and passed a national exam in their field, administered by one of the national paralegal associations. Requirements for the national exams differ between the three national paralegal organizations. A comparison can be found here .

      Usually, paralegals will be employed in their field for several years before they are ready to sit for an exam. However, some may sit for exams soon after graduation from a paralegal school or college program, particularly if they had the opportunity to gain work experience as part of their coursework.

      Currently there are four national exams from which to select:

      Professional Paralegal Associations

      Connecticut has three professional paralegal associations, all of which are affiliates of the NFPA and which together form the Connecticut Alliance of Paralegal Associations. All three organizations offer continuing education and professional development, disseminate information affecting paralegals from the state and federal level, and work to increase opportunities for professional paralegals.

      Since 1975, the Connecticut Association of Paralegals, Inc. (CAP) has worked with paralegals, students, institutions, and the legal community to define, develop and further the paralegal profession. For students, CAP offers a mentoring program. CAP partners with the NFPA to offer professional development seminars throughout the year. It also hosts social events and membership meetings to promote networking and support between paralegals. More than 200 people belong to CAP.

      The Central Connecticut Paralegal Association, Inc. (CCAP), established in 1982, offers pro bono work to the community, educates the legal community and the general population about the services that paralegals provide, and hosts monthly membership meetings for education, networking and support. It also maintains a job bank for paralegals.

      Over 140 members belong to the New Haven County Association of Paralegals (NH-CAP), which works to address changing complexities in the law through continuing legal education, provide networking opportunities for its members and work with public demand for increased access to public information. NH-CAP hosts monthly dinner meetings for education and support. Additionally, the NH-CAP encourages its members to both continue educating themselves and to make their employers aware of those educational credits.

      Part-Time Job Overview

      About 20 percent of working Americans have a part-time job where they work less than 35 hours a week. Whether you work part time or full time is often influenced by age and gender. About 78 percent of 16- to 19-year-olds and 29 percent of people 55 and older work a part-time job, whereas only 20 percent of workers 25 to 54 are part-time employees, according to government data. In addition, more women (33 percent) than men (20 percent) hold part-time employment.

      Part-Time Job Market

      Industries where a lot of workers have part-time jobs include:

      • Leisure and hospitality: 45 percent
      • Sales: 32 percent
      • Retail and wholesale: 31 percent
      • Office and administrative: 28 percent
      • Education and health services: 28 percent

      With the exception of education and healthcare jobs, which almost always require at least some college coursework, most part-time jobs require only a high school diploma.

      The recession increased the number of people who wanted to work full time but could find only part-time work. That was especially true for teens and young adults, less-educated workers, African American and Hispanic men, blue-collar workers, and people 65 and older, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) says.

      Part-Time Salaries

      The median part-time salary was $226 per week in the second quarter of 2012, according to the BLS. There are some careers where at least 20 percent of the workers are part time and earn $30 or more per hour (in 2006 dollars): dentists, pharmacists, art directors, physical therapists, chiropractors and dental hygienists.

      Pediatric Oncologist Job Description

      Although surgeons and radiation oncologists may treat cancer in pediatric patients, the term ‘pediatric oncologist’ usually refers to physicians who have specialized in pediatrics and then received further training in medical oncology and hematology. This means that rather than using surgery or radiation therapy to treat cancer, pediatric oncologists typically use medications and chemotherapy.

      Since pediatric oncologists treat children, their focus is somewhat different than that of medical oncologists who treat adults. Pediatric patients are not usually afflicted by the wide variety of cancers that are typically seen in adult patients, so pediatric oncologists may deal with fewer cancer cases and more hematologic disorders. Pediatric hematologist/oncologists primarily treat leukemia, lymphoma, embryonic tumors and genetic blood disorders, such as sickle-cell anemia and hemophilia.       Arbitrators, mediators, and conciliators, like attorneys, rely upon the law to help disputing parties resolve conflicts and differences. The resolution process takes place outside of the courts, where an arbitrator’s or mediator’s activities can include conducting interviews and preparing settlement documents. While it is possible to enter the field with a bachelor’s degree, some positions may require a law degree or graduate degree in business administration.

      According to the BLS, 30% of arbitrators, mediators, and conciliators in 2014 worked for local and state government agencies. Nationwide, the BLS anticipated a 9%, or faster-than-average, job increase for these professionals for 2014-2024.
