Valencia College

Enterprise Wide Continuous Improvement Operational Excellence

Lean Manufacturing practices have generally been adopted since the early 70’s, and has become a vital part of Continuous Improvement and Manufacturing Excellence. Continuous Improvement (CI) techniques such as 5S, Poka Yoke, SMED, and TPM are all major elements of achieving Lean practices across individual and multiple sites.
CI is at the heart of any LEAN initiative and so having an empowered CI team in place from inception is key in driving the process forward. The role of the team is to facilitate buy-in from Operators and Stakeholders so that everybody understands what impact they have in the improvement process and believe the potential value of the program, both departmentally and company-wide. Evolving an improvement culture and strategy across the whole organisation is vital to a successful CI program.

Other Lean Tools to be implemented as part of your Lean System

Six Sigma

Six Sigma describes quantitatively how a process is performing. It measures defects per million opportunities (DPMO) and a defect is defined as anything outside of customer specifications. The opportunity is then the total quantity of chances for a defect.
The fundamental objective of the methodology is the implementation of a measurement-based strategy that focuses on process improvement and variation reduction through the application of Six Sigma. The use of DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve and Control) is an improvement system for existing processes falling below specification and looking for incremental improvement. Six Sigma processes are executed by Six Sigma Green Belts and Six Sigma Black Belts, and are overseen by Six Sigma Master Black Belts.

Just in time Production

JIT is a pull based system based on buying enough materials to fit into production and ensuring an even flow of materials, which results in holding less stock. Having the correct amount of materials in line with a production plan will reduce in process inventory and associated costs. Raw materials will arrive on schedule and in the planned order and amounts to go into production. An effective inventory management system is essential to improving and supporting a JIT supply model.
JIT manufacturing includes bringing together sequences such as fabrication, sub assembly, inventory, supplier, final assembly and shipping to quicken turnover, eliminate idle inventory, reduce waste, reduce money tied up in inventory, and increase efficiency to raise productivity. JIT is dependent on signals or Kanban’s, which tells production when to make the next part. JIT operations is a great way to improve inventory accuracy and achieve a better more lean material flow for greater inventory management control. JIT compliments continuous improvement and lean manufacturing by having the right materials, at the right place, and in the right amounts.

Kanban

Kanban is a Pull System which enables Production to request material at the time of use. As parts are consumed within the manufacturing process, the Kanban signal triggers the delivery, both internally and externally* to the Point of Use/Fit (POU/POF). This is a supporting function to a sequencing operation which eliminates the need for multiple parts at the POF, thus reducing shop-floor inventory.
One of the main benefits of Kanban is to establish an upper limit to the work in progress inventory, as part of the ‘pull’ demand approach, inventory stock levels are also managed better and usually have smaller, faster turnarounds. Electronic, paperless Kanban systems eliminate manual entry errors and enable real-time demand signalling using a mix of technology, such as barcode scanners, to trigger materials within the production process.
A typical Kanban system marks inventory with barcodes which workers scan at different stages of the process, signalling usage. The scan sends a message to internal stores to ensure restocking of the item. Having a real-time view of inventory throughout the supply chain can significantly improve and support Lean Manufacturing processes.

Poka Yoke

‘Poka Yoke’ is a Japanese term meaning ‘fail-safeing’ or ‘error proofing’. These systems detect and prevent process errors for improved quality control and can be implemented in a manufacturing process to help an operator avoid mistakes caused by choosing the wrong part. The purpose is to eliminate product defects by preventing, correcting or drawing attention to both human and mechanical errors as they occur.
There are two types of Poka Yoke systems: the Prevention (control approach) which guides the operator through a process and determines whether the correct process is being followed and prevents a defect from occurring, and the Detection (warning approach) that catches a defect which has already occurred before the goods are shipped to the customer. Devices are used to identify product defects by testing criteria such as the product’s shape, size, or colour. If the product doesn’t comply, a warning will be signalled. Poka Yoke technologies can include; electronic check-lists, locating pins, error alarm detection, physical contact sensors – photocell, touch switches, energy sensors – photoelectric switch, proximity switch, beam sensors, warning sensors – lights, colour code, timers, detectors, readers, meters, and counters.
Poka Yoke systems have many benefits when implemented into Continuous Improvement and Lean Manufacturing strategies resulting in enhanced and controlled processes; leading to reduced rework, scrap and warranty costs, reduction of waste for improved waste management, achieving ZDQ (Zero Defect Quality) which reduces the associated costs with manufacturing defects, improves quality for sustained customer satisfaction, loyalty and retention, and achieving 100% compliance, zero defects, zero waste, zero delays to reduce overall manufacturing costs and improve productivity.

Exclusive: Inside the rarely-acknowledged missions of two Navy SEALs killed in action

Navy Seal Kyle Milliken, 38, was shot and killed in Somalia in May. He was on a raid serving as an adviser to Somali forces as he and his team approached a compound alongside local troops.

Their deaths underscore the fact that from Somalia to Yemen, as well as in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan, the war against ISIS, al Qaeda and their affiliates has largely fallen on special operations forces to fight.

With the political reluctance in recent years to send large numbers of conventional forces to the front lines, small teams of special operations forces have become increasingly the force of choice for commanders in battling terrorist networks.

And these highly trained troops are increasingly paying with their lives. Five have been killed in action so far this year, and a total of 22 have died since June 2014 when the war against ISIS began.

CNN has obtained the battlefield citations for both Owens and Milliken — both of whom served for years on high-risk classified combat missions — revealing new details of their extraordinary service.

Owens’ secret battle in Somalia

For his actions in one battle, Owens was posthumously awarded the Silver Star, the nation’s third highest medal for valor. His citation contains astonishing details of the never-disclosed battle against 400 al Qaeda militants deep inside war-torn Somalia in 2015.

This secret battle raged for three days in July 2015, with Owens leading a 12-man team alongside African forces, targeting 400 enemy militants. He was ambushed and attacked with “small arms, machine guns, anti-aircraft guns, rocket propelled grenades, mortars, and improvised explosive devices,” according to his citation.

Owens “repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire” the citation says, eventually securing a town that had been in enemy hands for 10 years. On earlier tours, he helped rescue buddies who were pinned down and wounded, and guided in Medevac choppers while under fire.

Virginia Rep. Scott Taylor, a former Navy SEAL sniper, knew both men. Of Owens, he said: “From everything I knew about him, he was a great guy — highly committed, highly talented.”

Milliken’s final mission

On Milliken’s final mission last month, he was an adviser to Somali forces, and was in the line of fire under considerable risk, according to the battlefield citation. He was shot and killed as his unit approached a compound west of Mogadishu. Taylor, like many who have served on front lines, rejects the controversial Pentagon view that when troops are military advisers they must stay out of the direct line of fire.

“‘There are no boots on the ground, they are just advisers,’ well we know that’s BS. Of course they are all boots on the ground,” Taylor said. “I think you need to get back to using conventional forces.”

Taylor added: “You certainly can’t fault the operator for wanting to get into the fight. They are there, they are there on the ground with the force they are helping.”

‘Concealed’ position

Since Obama began sending special operations forces into war zones with local forces on counterterrorism missions, the basic military policy has been that US troops should try to stay behind a ‘covered” or “concealed’ position in order to not draw fire to themselves. It’s a policy that most troops say simply doesn’t work on the battlefield but that the Pentagon under President Trump still appears to be bound to.

But Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, recently made clear that no changes to that policy are expected.

“The fundamental rule that applies to all of our forces that are conducting partnered ops that — that they would be at the last cover and conceal position, and not actually the ones closing with the enemy, because fundamentally we conduct partnered operations,” he said at a news conference on May 22. “It is the partners who are actually closing with and destroying the enemy.”

However, at a Capitol Hill hearing on Tuesday, Dunford did concede that special operations forces are stretched, stating that he had been asked by Secretary of Defense, James Mattis to examine all special operations missions to determine where conventional forces can be substituted.

The future of special operations

Taylor recalled his own first mission in Iraq, which was alongside Milliken.

“Everyone loved Kyle, everyone loved him,” he said.

Milliken also served for years in combat as part of a heavily relied-upon special operations force. In 2007 alone, he conducted 48 combat missions in Iraq. During one mission, he helped evacuate three wounded SEALs under fire. In 2009, his team was spotted as they approached a compound they were raiding. Milliken went in, killing enemy forces from less than 20 feet away.

The citations released to CNN remain heavily blacked out, shielding classified details. But there is one clue on how secret their work was. In 2015, Milliken was awarded the Navy achievement medal for developing “ground-breaking procedures” for “future national mission taskings.”

In the world of special operations, “national missions” are the most classified, requiring presidential approval and often remaining secret for decades.

Program Description

The mission of the 60-hour specialist-level NASP-approved School Psychology M.S. Program at the University of Central Arkansas is to prepare entry level school psychologists to apply scientifically-based psychological and educational principles and practices in all dimensions of their professional work. Graduates of the program are expected to be reflective and competent professionals committed to the increased understanding of human behavior, continuing professional development, best practices in school psychology, cultural respect and diversity, and ethical standards of professional practice as articulated by the American Psychological Association (APA) and the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP).

Housed within the Department of Psychology and Counseling in the College of Health and Behavioral Sciences, the program emphasizes the professional identity of school psychologists within the broader field of psychology, a breadth and depth of professional training that prepares candidates to competently perform a variety of school psychology functions, and an education that values and respects cultural diversity among candidates, faculty, and service recipients.

Highlights of the program include:

  • 60-credit-hour program including 1,200 hour internship (3 years total)
  • Graduate Assistantship positions available – apply through UCA Graduate School

Prospective Students

All applicants for the Masters program in School Psychology must meet the general requirements of the Graduate School and specific requirements of the Masters program. All prospective students must apply to both the Graduate School and the Department of Psychology Counseling by January 15.

1. Apply to the Graduate School:

  • Complete an Online Graduate School Admission application (Graduate School Admissions )
  • Submit official transcripts of all completed college course work to the Graduate School Office
  • Submit official Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) scores on the General Section to the Graduate School Office

2. Apply to the Department of Psychology Counseling:

  • Apply to the School Psychology Program by completing the online application form .
  • Applicants will be required to respond to the following:
    • 12 hours of undergraduate prerequisite coursework including: General psychology, statistics and 2 other psychology courses
    • Three letters of recommendation from former college professors or individuals otherwise qualified to comment on the applicant’s professional and academic potential.
    • Essay: Statement of Career Path and Aspirations a 500-word essay focusing on your career aspirations as a counseling psychologist and research interests. This may include: a) significant people or events that have led you to pursue a career in psychology, b) strengthens and limitations and c) impact you would like to make (for others, the field, etc).
    • Current resume or vita.

It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all materials are received by the admissions deadline.

In order to become a licensed professional in school psychology in Arkansas or elsewhere, students must complete the entire 60-hour Post-Master s certificate program. After 45 hours, students will be awarded a Master s degree and then they continue for another 15 hours (which includes internship experience) in order to finish the program. In accordance with Federal regulations, the following Gainful Employment information is provided for the graduates of our program.

Transfer of Graduate Credit

For students who have completed some graduate work at other universities, the School Psychology Program may allow the transfer of some graduate credit applicable to the student’s doctoral work at UCA. Requests to transfer graduate-level coursework will only be accepted after the student has been accepted into the program. Requests for transfer of credit must be made in writing by the student and his/her faculty advisor to the School Psychology Director of Training. The School Psychology Committee and Department Chair will consider inquiries regarding transfer of credit on an individual basis, and only those courses that essentially duplicate a UCA course will be considered for transfer. All course transfers must be approved by the School Psychology Committee and the Department Chair.

All documents relating to admission should be submitted to Concordia University’s Office of Graduate Admission and Student Services prior to the deadline for your anticipated term of enrollment. Admission Requirements

Admission to the doctoral program occurs prior to initiation of course work. The number of students admitted will be limited to ensure quality of program and dissertation advising.

Applicants who are successful in their application for admission for entrance into the doctoral program will meet the following criteria:

  • Master’s degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • A completed Doctoral Application for Admission
  • Submission of rationale statement, including personal goals for applying for admission to the program.
  • Transcripts: Submission of official transcripts of all previous credits.
  • Testing: Current Graduate Record Exam or Miller Analogies Test scores (test taken within the prior three years).
  • Letters of recommendation from two persons qualified to comment upon the applicant’s potential for doctoral study.
  • Past experience: At least two years of successful teaching/administrative experience (required only for doctoral programs in K-12 education).
  • Writing sample: Submit a paper that demonstrates your ability to write in a scholarly manner at a level typical of graduate work. A paper from your master’s program would be most appropriate. This sample should approach, but not exceed, five pages in length.

Once the admission file is completed and initially reviewed, qualified applicants will complete an extemporaneous writing sample followed by a personal interview with an admission committee.

Admission recommendations are submitted from the admission committee to the Dean of the College of Education, who will then make the final admission decision and communicate the decision to the candidate. The admission committee may establish an admission waiting list, if necessary. Students admitted should consult the Doctoral Program Handbook for additional program information.

Students who are applying for admission to the doctoral program are precluded from enrolling in any courses which met doctoral program requirements until the student has been completely admitted to the program.

The Graduate Admission Committee reserves the right to request additional information or documentation deemed helpful in evaluating applicants for admission.

Additional Testing

Depending on program of study, students may be required to take additional tests such as the Graduate Record Exam, Miller Analogies Test and/or the Illinois Basic Skills Test. A writing sample, essay, FBI fingerprint criminal background check, valid teaching certificate and/or interview may also be required to determine what may be necessary for a student to qualify for a graduate program.

Pending Status

Doctoral and international students are not eligible for Pending Status .

International Students

Applicants who are not U.S. citizens are required to meet all admission standards listed for the program they wish to enter. In addition, the following are required to be considered for admission:

  • TOEFL: A score of at least 550 (paper-based) or 72 (internet) minimum requirement on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or successful completion of Level 112 at an English Language School (ELS) unless English is the native language, and an unqualified recommendation from an ELS program director is provided. (International students who have earned an advanced degree from an accredited institution in the United States do not need to submit TOEFL scores.)
  • Transcripts: Official transcripts from each college/university attended showing all college/university course work with certified English translations of all transcripts originally prepared in any other language. Also, any international transcripts must be evaluated by a Concordia-approved international credentialing service such as WES (World Education Services), ECE (Educational Credential Evaluators), or AACRAO (American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers).
  • Financial Support: A certified document guaranteeing adequate financial support for at least the student’s first year of study and, barring any unforeseen circumstances, adequate funding from the same or an equally dependable source, for subsequent years.
  • Medical: A physical exam, adequate medical insurance, and proof of immunization are required prior to enrollment.
  • Regular Admission Requirements: International students must qualify for regular admission to a degree program in order to enroll.

All documents must be received by the Office of Graduate Admission and Enrollment Services at least three months prior to the expected date of entry. I-20 forms may be issued only after University acceptance is granted and will remain in effect only for students who continue to make satisfactory progress as full-time students in an accepted university program. The program length may vary for each student.

We decided to investigate. We looked at more than 52,000 car insurance quotes given to our users to see what combination of factors would result in a quote of $39 a month or less.

Not all of our findings will surprise you you may already know that buying minimum liability coverage (like 25/50) helps keep your rate low. And you ll probably have to skip collision and comprehensive coverage in order to score a bill of $39 a month.

Still, our research revealed that other factors play important roles in getting you a rock-bottom rate. If you’ve compared car insurance quotes and found that your numbers are a little higher than you’d like, noting the keys below may help.

Keys to getting cheap car insurance

Based on our analysis of quotes, here s how to get auto insurance for $39 a month or less:

  • Don t ask for an SR-22. This is a form required by many states when you ve got a bad driving record and will be required to prove financial responsibility. It s a big black mark, so don’t expect a $39 a month rate if you need one of these.
  • Own your vehicle outright. Maybe you re a superior driver, but if you ve got a car loan it may keep you from getting the very best rates. This is because most lenders require you to carry comprehensive and collision insurance on cars that aren’t paid off.
  • Insure only one vehicle. This makes sense the more vehicles you put out on the road, the more possible claims. Our analysis found that in 91.1 percent of the cases where drivers received quotes for $39 a month or less, they had no SR-22, owned their cars and insured only one vehicle.
  • Don t have any lapse in auto insurance coverage. This will make you an less-desirable customer to carriers. It suggests you may be bad at paying bills, or that you were possibly driving around uninsured. Either one of those traits makes you a riskier driver in the eyes of insurance companies.
  • Have no past claims. In many cases, a driver with no past claims equals a desirable customer for insurers.
  • Have no driving violations, license suspensions or revocations on your record. Again, customers with clean driving records are the likeliest to get ultra-low rates.
  • Have a credit score of 650 or higher. In most states, auto insurers are allowed to use your credit score in pricing your policy. Our data show that many of the drivers offered the best rates have scores of at least 650.

Correcting problems that occur with your washing machine will require knowing where to look for the problem. We also know all of the correct sealers applications so that your tile stone not only looks great when it is installed, but also 10 and 20 years from now We do recommend calling us back to professionally deep clean reseal the tile every 2-3 years for interior applications and every 1-2 years for exterior installations.

*** For bathroom shower remodels and tile installations I like to mud float all of my shower walls using roofing paper to protect the studs from water damage, metal wire mesh for strength and reinforcement, and a sand, cement, and water mix for the actual wall float which is far stronger and more durable than hardiebacker or similar products. I use 1/8 inch grout joints to make for a cleaner looking job. I also can handle any fabrication and bullnosing of travertine, marble, granite, slate,quartzite, limestone tiles and slabs, and some porcelain.

*** A good tile job is no accident. It takes good communication between the homeowner and tile installer.

*** We also specialize in epoxy grout installation for industrial and commercial projects as well as for tile countertops and shower pans in the home.
Epoxy grout is more stain resistant and alot stronger than regular sanded grouts which helps to reduce cracked grout in the shower and future water and mold damage.

*** For our flagstone, saltillo pavers, terra cotta tile and slate tile refinishing and restoration ( stripping. cleaning. sealing and resealing ) we use enviromentally friendly and low VOC products which do not leave chemical odors in the home.
We can also clean your grout and use an epoxy grout stain to give your grout a new consistent appearance. As well as staining saltilloo tile pavers.

*** I also install cork underlayment for soundproofing condos, offices, and homes before the finish floor installation. As well as installing cork laminate flooring and conventional laminate flooring.
Cork flooring is a good choice for clothes closets off of master bathrooms, offices, and small children’s rooms.

The Doctorate in Physical Therapy Program
The doctorate program is a professional educational program leading to a clinical doctorate (Doctor of Physical Therapy or DPT) as the entry-level degree for professional practice. The program is three years in length, including eight to 10 weeks of full-time clinical work in each of the summers between the first and second years.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. Doctor of Physical Therapy students enrolled in Sacred Heart University s College of Health Professions presented the results of their semester-long projects with posters recently at SHU s Trumbull facility. In all, 65 third-year doctoral students worked on projects in teams of four to six and created posters for the presentation, outlining their work. The 15 posters illustrated students service learning clinical projects, which related to the development of health promotion or quality improvement programs at such local facilities as physical therapy clinics, hospitals, skilled nursing centers, adult day care agencies and community agencies. The project is the last hurdle for the students before they begin clinical internships, according to Donna Bowers, chair of the doctor of physical therapy program.

Why earn a master’s degree?

Attending graduate school is a calculated risk – a risk you should consider carefully before dusting off the backpack, pulling out the laptop and heading back to class. Before you enroll, you may want to consider these five things

Examine salary and educational trends in your prospective degree field before taking the plunge – does the value of the degree make it worth the cost?
  2. Consider the cost. Graduate school may be expensive. Period. Costs may vary by the school and program, the availability of financial aid and the length of the master’s program. However, be sure to factor in the opportunity cost, that is, the possible loss of employment income while you attend school.
  3. Private life vs. school balance. Do you have family and work responsibilities? Can you balance newly added pressures of graduate school and sustain your family and/or work life?
  4. Handling tuition. The breaking point for many future students is tuition. How will you pay for tuition? Are you prepared to assume debt by taking on student loans? Can you work while you attend school?
  5. Relocation is a possibility. After reviewing master’s degree programs, will you have to relocate? Is your ‘dream’ program located 2,000 miles across the country? Be sure to consider the school’s location before making a decision.

Four reasons to pursue a master’s degree

As you confront the various decision points about going back to school, there are four major reasons to make that decision – career choices, employment and earnings.

  1. Allows you to change direction. Ready for a change in careers or a new position within your current field? Studying for a master’s degree may allow you to change course on your career path, either pivoting into a new career field entirely or developing new managerial and deep skill sets that may allow you to move up in your current employment arena.
  2. Reveals skills and competency. Do those little letters after your name – MBA, MA, MS – really make a difference on your resume? They sure do. A master’s degree listed on your resume may not be just an ornament; it may also reflect newly defined skills and competency within your field of study.
  3. Increases earnings opportunities. The third, and probably most important, reason to pursue a master’s degree is the possibility of increasing career earnings. As you make a decision, be sure to set realistic goals, do your homework and make a plan before settling on a master’s degree program.

Pursuing a master degree: Requirements for admission

There are four major graduate admissions tests that may be used for applicants applying to liberal arts and non-professional programs, law school, medical school and business school. Here is an overview of each of these exams.

GRE (Graduate Records Examinations). The GRE is the most widely accepted graduate admissions test required for admissions to graduate school and is usually taken by students applying to liberal arts and non-professional graduate programs. There are three components to the test: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and an analytical writing section. The analytical writing section consists of two parts: issue task and argument task. Scores range from 130 to 170.

GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test). If you’re applying to business school, you may be required to take the GMAT as part of your application process. There are four parts to the GMAT: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning and analytical writing. You may be given three and a half hours to take the test, and the total score may be from 200 to 800 points.

LSAT (Law School Admission Test). The LSAT is widely used by law schools in the admissions process. The exam includes sections on reading comprehension, analytical reasoning, logical reasoning and writing. While the writing portion of the exam is not scored, it is sent to the law schools to which the test taker has applied. Total LSAT scores customarily range from 120 to 180.

MCAT (Medical College Admission Test). This test is administered to medical school applicants. The four sections of the MCAT are physical sciences, verbal reasoning, biological sciences and writing. The writing portion is being phased out of this exam in 2013, with an unscored trial section taking its place. Raw scores may be converted to a scale of one to 15.

Preparatory materials may be available for all graduate exams and may include practice tests and study courses. Exam and master degree requirements may vary by degree program and institution, so you should check with your school of choice for its individual exam requirements.

Over the years, Maine has implemented several policies to ensure that digital learning is available to students of all ages. In fact, in early 2012, Gov. Paul LePage signed an executive order granting the expansion of online learning options in all classrooms by 2013. While the latest executive order wasn t directed to higher education institutions specifically, systems have still launched efforts to create and improve online schools in Maine and higher education as a whole as well.

Higher Learning Initiatives

LOOC: Little Open Online Course Initiative

Starting in 2012, the University of Maine at Presque Isle started experimenting with open courseware on a smaller scale. Loosely called LOOC, U of Maine at PI lets a set number of non-paying students tune in to select online classes. Tuition-paying and non-tuition-paying students are treated the same and must do the same work; however, the latter do not earn credit. The institution implemented the initiative in hopes of attracting more students to officially enroll in its traditional and online classes.

The Maine OnLine Learning Initiative

Both the U.S. Department of Labor and the Maine Department of Labor joined forces with the Sloan Foundation, Rutgers University, and Pennsylvania State University in 2009 to launch The Maine OnLine Learning Initiative. a program designed to award tuition support to incumbent workers pursuing online licenses, certificates, and degrees to improve their careers. Only those pursuing advancement in high priority industries, such as health care, information technology, and financial services from St. Joseph s College are eligible for the aid.

Maine Compact for Higher Education

In 2003, the Maine Community Foundation partnered with the Maine Development Foundation to launch the Maine Compact for Higher Education. an initiative aimed at increasing the number of degree holders in the state by 2020. Another goal the initiative plans to achieve is getting support from employers so that workers can enroll in more online schools in Maine and can take course work on job sites. This means more accessibility to career advancement.

Home Software Word: Create an Electronic Signature

Sometimes it would be nice to send a signature without having to print the completed document first, sign the document, scan it, and save again in order to send to the recipient.

The document I was working on actually consisted of multiple signatures that were required. So there were signature lines that ran down the left margin, as well as a series of signatures that ran down the halfway point of the page.

If you have a signature line with subsequent lines indicating your title and department, a graphic can put too much space between the information and make it look, well… like you actually didn’t sign it. Also, you will want the ability to place the signature in a specific location.

These directions are for Word 2007. However, all of these features are available in Word 97-2003.

Directions to creating a signature within Word:

  1. Scan your signature and save as a graphic file. You may need to edit the graphic to select just the signature portion of the scan. A really basic program that works great is Paint. I know, too easy.
    • With the original scanned graphic in Word, point and click on the graphic to select it, Copy (Ctrl+C) the graphic, switch to Paint (Alt+Tab), and then Paste (Ctrl+V) the graphic into Paint.
    • Click outside the grahic onto the white background and drag the handles on the sides and /or corners of the white background to eliminate excess.
    • Don t forget to save as a grahic file (jpg, tif). When you do Save As. at the bottom, under where you type in the File name: is a drop down menu for Save as type: .
  2. With your cursor on the signature line (it could be a graphic line or a tabbed underline), from the Menu bar select Insert. Then select Insert Picture from File. From here your directory will appear for you to select the signature graphic.
  3. Once you have selected your signature graphic, resize the graphic from the corner. If you resize from the top, bottom, or sides, it will expand or contract the image that is not a correct representation of your signature. If you resize from the corner it will maintain the aspect ratio and remain proportional to the authentic look of your signature.
  4. With your mouse over the graphic, right click and select Text Wrapping. scroll and select Behind Text .
  5. Select the graphic by left clicking on your mouse. While the graphic is selected, hold down the Ctrl key and pressing the up, down, left, and right arrow keys. This will position the graphic incrementally to where you want it. Or, you can merely hold down the left mouse button and drag the graphic to the location you want it go.

The graphic will literally go to any location you designate without interfering with or moving text around. Doing this permits the line to remain completely visible with any letters that would normally hang under it.

On a final note. I would like to suggest converting the document to .pdf or protecting the Word document as I explained earlier in Word: Restrict Formatting and Editing before sending it out. Otherwise your signature graphic is available to copy and save by anyone who receives the document in the original Word format.

Let me know how this works for you. Also, if you have any other suggestions that may be helpful, I welcome the creative insight. I did try keep the directions very simple. Sometimes, the more complicated, the more confusing.

OIL SANDS WATER MANAGEMENT INITIATIVE

CAPP forecast that oil sands production will nearly double by 2020 rising from 1.61m barrels per day last year to 3.16m bpd, driving on to reach 5m bpd by 2030.

This means one thing in particular for professionals working in SAGD: more competition for water.

To take full advantage of oil sands growth in Canada, operators are spending millions of dollars testing out new water treatment technologies to minimize the need for fresh water during steam generation and reduce the costs of recovery.

Continually evolving regulations from the ERCB and Alberta Environment combined with water scarcity mean there is increasing pressure on operators to re-use water resources and move towards zero-discharge SAGD operations. By keenly adopting innovative treatment technologies for using brackish and produced water in steam generation. lowering costs and significantly increasing re-use rate are achievable.Improvements in evaporation and hot lime softening technology mean that the options for improving water management for steam generation are growing. The question is which technology works most cost-effectively within the new ERCB directives? The answers can come only from regulators and from E P companies delivering case-study based operating experiences on the best practices and techniques that are being successfully applied on a daily basis across the Athabasca region.

The third annual Oil Sands Water Management Initiative. was held in Calgary on January 30-31, and was re-researched and re-developed to build upon the learning points of last year and address the most current commercial learning challenges in relation to sourcing, treating re-using and disposing of water used in SAGD.

Over two days, the brand new speaker line up hosted E P speakers from some of the most active companies in the region will share experiences on their water management strategies.

The initiative is the 3rd in the sell-out Canadian Oil Sands Water Management Series that has been attended by over 500 delegates and speakers and will be once again be attended by all major companies producing oil sands in situ in Western Canada.

Day one examined the latest techniques for emulsion separation and de-oiling to increase bitumen recovery, how E Ps are moving from fresh water to brackish water and the treatment requirements that need met to enable the use of brackish water in steam generation. Day one also included an evaporator technology case study panel featuring presentations on evaporator technology, its integration into SAGD facilities and the latest developments in enhancing performance and reducing chemical consumption. Day one finished looking at water retention in the reservoir and how different steam qualities affect production, before regulatory update from the ERCB, discussing Directive 081 and with a live demonstration of the Thermal In Situ Water Publication.

Day two heard an open with case study on how an operator is using recycling best practices to minimize liquid discharge as well as mapping water sources and identifying alternative methods for water acquisition. Disposal zones for water used and produced in SAGD were also then be examined drilling down specifically into the disposal of blow down water and before a look at the use of alternative water sources for SAGD. Day two finished with an update on the regulations on groundwater monitoring and water conservation policy by Alberta Environment.

  • Facility Design Focus. Increased attention will be paid to the design aspect of treatment facilities to enhance learning on how to optimize re-use systems
  • Regulatory Directives Update: The very latest ERCB directives and calculations on re-use and disposal will be delivered to develop a road map on how to comply

Practical solutions will also be delivered from E P companies on the following key learning areas:

  • EMULSION AND DE-OILING. Assessing the latest techniques for emulsion separation and de-oiling to increase bitumen recovery and mitigate plant damage
  • ACHIEVING ZERO-LIQUID DISCHARGE. Examining how an operator has maximized recycling to achieve zero-liquid discharge during the in situ process
  • INNOVATION AND COLLABORATION. Discussing how operators can minimize capital and operating costs by sharing assets and by collaborating on non-competitive technologies
  • DISPOSAL. Examining what to look for when identifying zones for drilling disposal wells to ensure high discharge capacity
  • SOURCING. Exploring the productivity of source water aquifers in the Athabasca region and identifying new and innovative water sources to acquire the water critical to steam generation in SAGD

We are excited to announce the launch of the Health and Community Services departments online application. This is the standard application for all Health Career programs. Submitting this application does not guarantee selection. Each program has specific entry/documents/deadlines.

The Summer 2017 LVN-ADN Transition program will be held on the Hillsboro Campus.

Health and Community Services Program Application

This transition program is an upward educational mobility option for LVN’s currently licensed in the State of Texas who maintain good standing with the Texas Board of Nursing (LVN) or the Texas Department of State Health Services (Paramedic) and meets all the selection criteria as defined by the Hill College Professional Nursing Program.

The first course, RNSG 1327 Transition from Vocational to Professional Nursing, is a 5-6 week nursing course designed to evaluate the selected LVN’s theory base in nursing content and skills as well as introduce nursing theory not presented in the traditional vocational nursing curricula. Successful of this first course progresses the student to the next semester of student in this integrated curricula for ADN Transition students.

The second semester contains content and clinical learning experiences associated with comprehensive nursing care of diverse clients/patients across the life span with complex health care needs including childhood/adolescent diseases, complicated perinatal care, acute mental illness, complex perioperative care, serious adult health medical issues and health concerns related to aging.

The third semester provides content and clinical learning experiences to prepare the student to apply client assessment skills, critical thinking skills and independent nursing interventions to care for diverse clients/families throughout the life span whose health care needs may be difficult to predict. Topics include nursing leadership skills, client/patient management skills, trends in nursing and health care issues, legal and ethical concerns and the significance of continued professional development.

Kid genius brothers, 11 and 14, graduate high school and college this weekend

Carson Huey-You, 14, graduated from Texas Christian University on May 13, becoming the youngest graduate in history. He earned a degree in physics and minors in Chinese and math. (Amy Peterson, Texas Christian University)

Claretta Kimp wants you to understand this:

Yes, she gave birth to two child prodigies, and yes, they’re graduating from high school and college this weekend at ages 11 and 14, respectively. Carson, her oldest, is leaving Texas Christian University with a degree in physics and minors in Chinese and math. Cannan, the kid brother, will head to TCU next fall to study astrophysics and engineering. The first wants to get a PhD, the other wants to be an astronaut.

All that, Kimp concedes, is impressive.

But as a mom, her sons’ academic achievements rank low among her favorite facts.

“Yes, they’re smart,” Kimp told The Washington Post, “but that’s just a small part of who they are.”

The brothers, she said, are also best friends, study partners and big fans of their puppy, Klaus. They wrestle and laugh and hold the door open for women, just like their mother taught them. At home, Carson and Cannan do not fight, not even during their epic Star Wars lightsaber battles that make Kimp cringe. And don’t worry, Kimp tells the peanut gallery, their social lives are perfectly adequate. Their childhoods haven’t suffered.

“My boys have more social skills than most adults,” she said. “They are just normal little boys who do normal little boy things.”

It was their brilliance, though, that first landed them in the spotlight.

Four years ago, at age 10, Carson was admitted to TCU in Fort Worth and he began classes as an 11-year-old. On Saturday, he’ll become the youngest graduate in the university’s history.

Kimp, who studied early education and business at Southern Illinois University, said she converted the spare bedroom in their home into a classroom before Carson was even walking. At first, he played with blocks there. Then she started sitting him in a chair for class.

He was so excited to learn, Kimp said, that they created a set school day from 9 a.m. to noon. But Carson would blow through the curriculum she planned in an hour. By age 2, he was reading books with chapters, and at age 3 he told his mom he wanted to learn calculus.

Kimp home-schooled Carson until he was 5 years old and learning at an eighth grade level. She knew he needed to “get out a little bit,” she said, but she struggled to find a school that was willing or able to accommodate him. She finally found a small, private Christian school and cold-called the receptionist.

“I’m a normal functioning human being and I’m totally for real,” she recalls saying on the phone. “Here’s my situation.”

The principal eventually accepted Carson, and five years later he graduated as co-valedictorian.

Then the search for a school willing to accept a child started all over again.

Kimp said they visited numerous college campuses and listened to lectures about the Ivy League. But when it came time to decide, TCU bubbled to the top.

Ultimately, the decision was Carson’s. He told his mom that TCU “felt right.”

“TCU is our Ivy League,” Kimp said.

Physics professor Magnus Rittby, a senior associate dean, became Carson’s mentor and, eventually, his research adviser. Rittby knew how to ease Carson’s anxieties, push him academically and, most importantly to Kimp, treat her son like the kid he is.

“This experience at TCU would not have been possible without Dr. Rittby,” she said.

Carson faced challenges most college kids don’t. Federal financial aid forms, for example, didn’t include his age in the drop-down menu, and his mom had to drive him an hour and a half to school every day in rush hour traffic. Kimp walked him to and from class. And he had a 9 p.m. bedtime — 11 p.m. if he had to cram for a big exam.

Kimp eventually moved the family closer to campus, so their commute shortened to eight minutes. And the juggling act got even easier once Cannan started tagging along to TCU.

Because Kimp never wanted to make her sons feel in intellectual competition with each other, the divorced mom tried to avoid forcing Cannan down the same path as Carson. She wanted him to find his own way.

Cannan began on the traditional route, attending kindergarten with kids his own age. But my second grade, he was bored, and asked to be home-schooled like Carson, reported the Dallas Morning News. Kimp thinks her eldest son’s thirst for learning rubbed off on Cannan.

Even after she would complete lessons with Cannan, Carson would swoop in to help with homework, demonstrating on the whiteboard in their home how to breeze through complex math equations.

“They know that they are blessed to have a sibling and to have each other,” Kimp told The Post.

With both sons, she said she enjoyed “seeing the lightbulb moments.”

Cannan later enrolled in the same private high school that Carson attended. He went to the school to take exams, but mostly worked remotely from the TCU campus alongside his brother. Cannan even got to begin work on a research project with a TCU astronomy professor.

On Friday, he’ll walk at his high school graduation, and on Saturday, Carson will receive his college diploma.

And although her children are geniuses, Kimp chooses to measure her parental success in other ways.

Recently, Cannan and Carson were playing upstairs with their Star Wars lightsabers, gifts they got this year at Christmas. Made from hard plastic, they made a loud “whack!” every time they clashed together. Kimp listened from downstairs, waiting, she said, for an inevitable scream.

When it came from Carson, who had been thumped in the arm, she sat there for a minute to see what would happen next.

“Oh, I’m so sorry,” she heard Cannan said. “Let me rub it for you.”

She sat back feeling satisfied.

“Okay, yeah,” she said she thought to herself, “I’ve done a good job.”

    Traditionally banks in India have four types of deposit accounts, namely Current Accounts, Saving Banking Accounts, Recurring Deposits and, Fixed Deposits. However, in recent years, due to ever increasing competition, some banks have introduced new products, which combine the features of above two or more types of deposit accounts. These are known by different names in different banks, e.g 2-in-1 deposits, Smart Deposits, Power Saving Deposits, Automatic Sweep Deposits etc. However, these have not been very popular among the public.

    What is a Current Account. Who uses current accounts? Current Accounts in Banks

    Current Accounts are basically meant for businessmen and are never used for the purpose of investment or savings. These deposits are the most liquid deposits and there are no limits for number of transactions or the amount of transactions in a day. Most of the current account are opened in the names of firm / company accounts. Cheque book facility is provided and the account holder can deposit all types of the cheques and drafts in their name or endorsed in their favour by third parties. No interest is paid by banks on these accounts. On the other hand, banks charges certain service charges, on such accounts.

    Features of Current Accounts :

    (a) The main objective of Current Account holders in opening these account is to enable them (mostly businessmen) to conduct their business transactions smoothly.

    (b) There are no restrictions on the number of times deposit in cash / cheque can be made or the amount of such deposits;

    (c) Usually banks do not have any interest on such current accounts. However, in recent times some banks have introduced special current accounts where interest (as per banks’ own guidelines) is paid

    (d) The current accounts do not have any fixed maturity as these are on continuous basis accounts

    What is a Savings Bank Account. Who uses Saving Bank Accounts ?

    These deposits accounts are one of the most popular deposits for individual accounts. These accounts not only provide cheque facility but also have lot of flexibility for deposits and withdrawal of funds from the account. Most of the banks have rules for the maximum number of withdrawals in a period and the maximum amount of withdrawal, but hardly any bank enforces these. However, banks have every right to enforce such restrictions if it is felt that the account is being misused as a current account. Till 24/10/2011, the interest on Saving Bank Accounts was regulared by RBI and it was fixed at 4.00% on daily balance basis. However, wef 25th October, 2011, RBI has deregulated Saving Fund account interest rates and now banks are free to decide the same within certain conditions imposed by RBI. Under directions of RBI, now banks are also required to open no frill accounts (this term is used for accounts which do not have any minimum balance requirements). Although Public Sector Banks still pay only 4% rate of interest, some private banks like Kotak Bank and Yes Bank pay between 6% and 7% on such deposits. From the FY 2012-13, interest earned upto Rs 10,000 in a financial year on Saving Bank accounts is exempted from tax.

    What are Recurring Deposit Accounts. Who use Recurring Deposit Accounts. or RD accounts

    These are popularly known as RD accounts and are special kind of Term Deposits and are suitable for people who do not have lump sum amount of savings, but are ready to save a small amount every month. Normally, such deposits earn interest on the amount already deposited (through monthly installments) at the same rates as are applicable for Fixed Deposits / Term Deposits. These are best if you wish to create a fund for your child’s education or marriage of your daughter or buy a car without loans or save for the future.

    Under these type of deposits, the person has to usually deposit a fixed amount of money every month (usually a minimum of Rs,100/- p.m.). Any default in payment within the month attracts a small penalty. However, some Banks besides offering a fixed installment RD, have also introduced a flexible / variable RD. Under these flexible RDs the person is allowed to deposit even higher amount of installments, with an upper limit fixed for the same e.g. 10 times of the minimum amount agreed upon.

    These accounts can be funded by giving Standing Instructions by which bank withdraws a fixed amount on a fixed date of the month from the saving bank of the customer (as per his mandate), and the same is credited to RD account.

    Recurring Deposit accounts are normally allowed for maturities ranging from 6 months to 120 months. A Pass book is usually issued wherein the person can get the entries for all the deposits made by him / her and the interest earned. Banks also indicate the maturity value of the RD assuming that the monthly instalents will be paid regularly on due dates. In case instalment is delayed, the interest payable in the account will be reduced and some nominal penalty charged for default in regular payments. Premature withdrawal of accumulated amount permitted is usually allowed (however, penalty may be imposed for early withdrawals). These accounts can be opened in single or joint names. Nomination facility is also available.

    The RD interest rates paid by banks in India are usually the same as payable on Fixed Deposits, except when specific rates on FDs are paid for particular number of days e.g. 500 days, 555 days, 1111 days etc i.e. these are not ending in a quarter.

    What are Fixed Deposit Accounts in India or Term Deposits

    All Banks in India (including SBI, PNB, BoB, BoI, Canara Bank, ICICI Bank, Yes Bank etc.) offer fixed deposits schemes with a wide range of tenures for periods from 7 days to 10 years. These are also popularly known as FD accounts. However, in some other countries these are known as Term Deposits or even called Bond . The term fixed in Fixed Deposits (FD) denotes the period of maturity or tenor. Therefore, the depositors are supposed to continue such Fixed Deposits for the length of time for which the depositor decides to keep the money with the bank. However, in case of need, the depositor can ask for closing (or breaking) the fixed deposit prematurely by paying paying a penalty (usually of 1%, but some banks either charge less or no penalty). (Some banks introduced variable interest fixed deposits. The rate of interest on such deposits keeps on varying with the prevalent market rates i.e. it will go up if market interest rates goes and it will come down if the market rates fall. However, such type of fixed deposits have not been popular till date).

    The rate of interest for Fixed Deposits differs from bank to bank (unlike earlier when the same were regulated by RBI and all banks used to have the same interest rate structure. The present trends indicate that private sector and foreign banks offer higher rate of interest.

    The earlier trend that private sector and foreign banks offer higher rate of interest is no more valid these days. However, now a days small banks are forced to offer higher rate of interest to attract more deposits. Usually a bank FD is paid in lump sum on the date of maturity. However, most of the banks have also facility to pay/ credit interest in saving account at the end of every quarter. If one desires to get interest paid every month, then the interest paid will be at a marginal discounted rate. In the changed computerized environment, now the Interest payable on Fixed Deposit can also be easily transferred on due dates to Savings Bank or Current Account of the customer.

    Bankruptcy Filing Fees and Costs

    When you file for bankruptcy, you must pay a filing fee and costs associated with credit counseling. If you can t afford the filing fee, you might qualify to pay in installments or for a waiver of the entire fee.

    Here s the rundown of what you must pay, when you must pay it, and how to qualify for a fee waiver or installment payments.

    Fees to File a Bankruptcy Petition

    Effective June 1, 2014, the total fees you must pay to file a bankruptcy petition are:

    • $335 for Chapter 7
    • $310 for Chapter 13, and
    • $275 for Chapter 12.

    The bankruptcy court increases these fees from time to time. You can always find the most up-to-date fees on the website of the U.S. Courts at www.uscourts.gov .

    Fee Waivers and Paying the Fee Installments

    Normally, the filing fee is due when you file your petition. However, there are two exceptions — you may ask the court if you can pay the fee in installments, or you can request that the court waive the fee entirely.

    Application to Pay the Filing Fee in Installments

    You may ask the court to allow you to pay your filing fee in installments. To do this, you file Form 3A Application and Order to Pay Filing Fee in Installments. On the form, you must state that you cannot pay the fee except in installments and then propose a schedule for payment of the entire fee. Your proposed payment schedule cannot have more than four installments, and the final payment cannot be later than 120 days after you file the petition.

    Application for Fee Waiver

    You can ask the court to waive the filing fee. If the court waives the fee, you don t have to pay it. In order to qualify for a fee waiver, you:

    • must not be able to pay in installments, and
    • your income must be below 150% of the poverty line (you can get official poverty line figures from your bankruptcy court).

    You will have to file Form 3B Application for Waiver of Chapter 7 Filing Fee. In addition, you will have to appear in court so the judge can ask you questions.

    Chapter 13: Fee Waivers and Installment Payments

    Because you must have enough money to fund a repayment plan for three to five years in Chapter 13 bankruptcy, Chapter 13 filers will rarely qualify for a fee waiver.

    Also, Chapter 13 filers cannot make further payments to their attorney until the filing fee is paid in full. In practice, this means that Chapter 13 filers will rarely be able to pay the fee in installments, since their attorneys will most likely require payment of some attorney fees up front.

    Additional Costs Associated with Filing for Bankruptcy

    When you file for Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 bankruptcy, you must get credit counseling from an approved provider within six months before your filing. You must also take a personal financial management course prior to getting your bankruptcy discharged.

    Most approved credit counseling providers charge between $20 and $50 for the required counseling. Some don t charge anything. The law requires the agencies to provide counseling without regard to your ability to pay, so if you can t afford the counseling, let the agency know about this requirement.

    The debtor education courses also cost about $50. If you can t afford the amount charged, you can ask that the fee be waived or that you be allowed to pay a lesser amount.

    PA Blended Course

    All Park blended courses require weekly student activities and contact with the instructor; weekly attendance will be documented. Veterans Administration (VA) guidelines require at least 60% face-to-face content. Minimum class room F2F time at a campus center for a (3) credit hour course which meets (40) hours per term would be (3) credit hours x number of weeks in term (8) which equals (24) hours- (3) hours each week. At least 2 hours per week should be spent engaged in online classroom activities.

    Early Access to MPA Program Courses (Effective 2015-2016)
