For example, what’s commonly called the California Unemployment Office is a division of the Employment Development Department (EDD). Subsequently, the California unemployment office is officially called the Employment Development Department or simply the E-D-D.

Federal Unemployment Office

The Employment Training Administration (ETA), a division of the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), is the so-called Federal unemployment office. It’s the main unemployment office so to speak, because each state unemployment office is an agent of the DOLETA in the nation’s Unemployment Insurance System.

The DOLETA Web site is a great place to generally research unemployment benefits and laws. It is not, however, the place to file a claim for unemployment benefits. The nearest state unemployment office or its Web site is the place to do that. Links to state unemployment office Web sites are listed below.

State Unemployment Office

As indicated above, the unemployment office Web site for the state in which you work is the place to file a claim for standard, extended or disaster unemployment benefits, if it has online facilities for such. Many do; but, regardless of whether or not they have online claim-filing facilities, state unemployment office Web sites provide instructions or contact information for filing claims by other means.

State unemployment offices also administer state disability programs in the few states that have such. If you’re unemployed due to an injury or illness unrelated to your job, then you might be eligible for one or more state disability programs instead of unemployment benefits.

If you’re unemployed due to an occupational injury or illness directly related to your job, then you might be eligible for workers’ compensation benefits administered by workers’ compensation agencies.

State unemployment office Web sites are also good places to research state-specific unemployment benefits, eligibility requirements, appeals, laws and employer taxes.

Can I Claim Benefit?

You can make a claim for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction if:

  • You pay rent to a private landlord, housing association, or a council property. But you cannot claim Housing Benefit if you rent from close relatives or the landlord also lives in the same property. A close relative is a parent/step parent or sibling/step sibling. However, if the relative has a commercial tenancy agreement (ie they are a landlord who has let properties previously) then you may be able to claim
  • You have to pay Council Tax on your home. But if you live in a property that is band E or higher you will only be paid up to the amount for a band D property
  • Your savings are less than 16,000 for Housing Benefit and 6000 for Council Tax Reduction applications
  • You work full time or part time (employed or self-employed) and get a low wage
  • You get Benefit or Tax Credit managed by the Department for Work and Pensions, the Inland Revenue or any other low income.

The rules on claiming Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction for self-employed people, students, people from abroad and people who have savings are different to those who get Benefit or Pensions.

How Much Benefit Could I Get?

This is based on the amount of income and savings you have. The more you have the less you get. When we work out your Benefit we take into account:

  • How much money you have coming in each week

Working age – there will be a cap on the amount of benefits that you can get. The Benefit Cap forms part of the Welfare Reform Changes that came into force from April 2013. There are a number of benefits that are included in the Benefit Cap as well as a number of benefits and circumstances that will exclude you from having the cap applied. The Benefit Cap factsheet in Related downloads can explain this further.

If you are not excluded from the benefit amount cap, it will be set at:

  • 500 per week for couples and lone parents; or
  • 350 per week for single adults.
  • How much you have in savings and investments
  • Who lives in your household and their circumstances
  • How much rent and Council Tax you have to pay
  • Whether you are of pension age or working age
  • How many rooms you need for your household (Housing Benefit only).

Renting from South Essex Homes or Housing Associations

Working age – the amount that you are awarded for Housing Benefit depends on the number of rooms you are allowed for your family circumstances, this is known as Size Criteria . Size Criteria forms part of the Welfare Reform Changes that came into force from April 2013. If you are considered to have:

  • 1 extra bedroom you will have a 14% reduction on your Housing Benefit
  • 2 or more extra bedrooms you will have a 25% reduction to your Housing Benefit

You will have to make up the difference yourself. There are some groups of people that are excluded from having the size criteria applied to their claim. For further information about these groups of people please see the Size Criteria Factsheet 2014 in Related Downloads.

Renting from a Private Landlord

If you are working age or pension age the amount you get depends on the Local Housing Allowance rate for the size property you are claiming for. The rates and are updated yearly and can be found in the LHA Rates 2017/2018 Poster in Related Downloads.

Payment on Two Homes

Housing Benefit is normally only paid for one home at a time. However, there are some exceptions where the council may consider paying benefit on two homes. These exceptions are:

  • You have moved into rented accommodation due to fear of violence
  • You are a student/trainee, one of a couple and have to live in separate rented accommodation
  • You have a large family and the council has housed you in two properties
  • You have moved to a new home which you have to pay rent for, but still have to pay rent for a period of time on the old property. This is known as unavoidable overlapping liability.

How to Claim Unemployment Benefits

Wyoming unemployment claim

The purpose of unemployment insurance is to provide workers, who are unemployed through no fault of their own, with monetary payments for a specific period of time or until the worker finds a new job.

Unemployment benefits are provided by state unemployment insurance programs within guidelines established by Federal law. Eligibility for unemployment insurance, benefit amounts and the length of time benefits are available are determined by state law.

State Unemployment Benefits

Eligibility for unemployment insurance, benefit amounts and the length of time benefits are available are determined by state law and vary depending on where you live. Information on eligibility for state unemployment compensation is available on the state unemployment office website for your state.

The unemployment compensation you will receive will depend upon the amount you earned while working. In addition, there are eligibility requirements to qualify for unemployment benefits including working a certain number of weeks.

Regular unemployment benefits are paid for a maximum of 26 weeks, less in some states. In many states, the compensation will be half your earnings, up to a maximum amount. The maximum varies by location.

Federal Unemployment Benefits

There are no federal unemployment benefit programs in effect. Those benefits, known as an unemployment extension, provided additional weeks of unemployment compensation for the long-term unemployed.

Extended unemployment benefits, including Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) and Extended Benefit (EB) programs were available to workers who had exhausted regular state unemployment insurance benefits during periods of high unemployment prior to 2014.

Unemployment Eligibility

In order to receive unemployment compensation, workers must meet the unemployment eligibility requirements for wages earned or time worked during an established (one year) period of time.

In addition, workers must be determined to be unemployed through no fault of their own.

Disqualification from Unemployment

The following circumstances may disqualify you from collecting unemployment benefits, depending on state law:

  • Quit without good cause
  • Fired for misconduct
  • Resigned because of illness (check on disability benefits)
  • Left to get married
  • Self-employed
  • Involved in a labor dispute
  • Attending school

Unemployment Benefits

  • Regular benefits are paid for a maximum of 26 weeks in most states. Some states provide benefits for fewer weeks.
  • In many states, the compensation will be half your earnings, up to a maximum amount.
  • Benefits are subject to Federal income taxes and must be reported on your Federal income tax return.

When to File

Filing for unemployment should be the first item on your agenda when you ve been laid off. It might take two or three weeks to collect a check, so the sooner you file, the faster you ll get paid. A delay in filing will mean a delay in collecting.

You may be able to file for unemployment online or over the phone. Review the information you will need to open a claim. Then, visit your state unemployment office to determine the best way to open a claim and to get started collecting unemployment.

In general, to file a claim you will need:

  • Social Security Number
  • Alien Registration Card if you re not a US citizen
  • Mailing address including zip code
  • Phone number
  • Names, addresses and dates of employment for all your past employers for the last two years

Getting Paid

  • It generally takes a few weeks after your claim to receive your first unemployment benefit check, direct deposit or debit card. Some states require a one-week waiting period; therefore, the second week claimed is the first week of payment.
  • Once your claim is approved, you should be able to file weekly online, by phone or by mail.

Unemployment When You Quit

Can you collect unemployment if you quit your job? It depends. In most cases, if you voluntarily left employment you are not eligible. However, if you left for good cause you may be able to collect.

Good cause would be determined by the state unemployment office and you will be able to make a case for why you are eligible for benefits. If your claim is denied, you should be entitled to a hearing where you can plead your case.

State Requirements for Unemployed Workers

Registering with the state job service and actively seeking work is a requirement while collecting unemployment. You must be ready, willing, available, and able to work. The Job Service may require job seekers to apply for jobs, submit resumes, and not turn down a position if it meets certain standards.

Your state Job Service Offices are excellent resources to assist with a job search. Many free services are offered including job listings, career counseling, resume and cover letter writing help, and training. Take advantage of the help they can give you – it will make your job search easier.

It can be hard to get through to an unemployment office on the phone. Most states want claimants to file online, and it can be difficult to locate a phone number if you have a question or need to talk to a representative about your claim.

However, in some situations, the only way to get a definitive answer or clarification is to talk to an actual person. The FAQ sections of most state unemployment websites don t cover all circumstances, and unemployment claims can be complicated.

Phone numbers are usually listed in the Contact Us section of your state unemployment office website.

A quick and easy way to find a telephone number or email address for your unemployment office is to search Google using your state s name, unemployment office and phone number. For example, searching Google for New York unemployment phone brings me directly to the contact information page for the NYS Department of Labor s Unemployment Insurance contact page.

If English is not your first language, some states have telephone claims lines in other languages. For examples, California provides separate phone numbers for English, Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, and Vietnamese speaking customers. If available, information on alternative phone numbers will also be listed on the contact page for the unemployment office.

You may also be able to contact claims staff by email, but do not send any confidential information in your email message.

The Best Time to Call

If you are having difficulty connecting with a representative, the best time to call unemployment without having to be on hold for a long time is later in the week, and either early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

The Workers’ Compensation Claim Process

Most employers are required to carry workers’ compensation, or workers’ comp, insurance to cover employees who are injured on the job. Employees do not have to prove fault in order to recover, but benefits are not automatic. Specifics of the workers’ compensation claims process vary by state, but injured employees generally must notify their employer and the workers’ comp carrier. Regardless of state laws, however, injured employees are always encouraged to obtain any necessary medical treatment first.

Assuming you’ve already received medical attention, the workers’ compensation claim process involves several important steps. You must notify your employer in writing; fill out an official claim form (which should be provided by your employer); and keep detailed records about your treatment.

Get Immediate Medical Attention

Before filing a workers’ comp claim, make sure you get the necessary medical treatment. Some workers’ comp policies require injured employees to see a specified doctor, so you may want to ask your supervisor. But many state laws allow you to get a second opinion if you are not satisfied with the first one. Even if you don’t feel the need to get medical attention, it may be a requirement for the workers’ compensation claim process.

Keep in mind that a medical report will serve as an official record of your injuries and the basis for any workers’ comp reimbursement.

Notify Your Employer

Make sure you notify your employer about the injury within the statutory deadline, preferably soon after the injury occurs. In New York, for example, an employee has 30 days in which to notify their employer about a job-related injury. It’s a good idea to report all workplace accidents even if you don’t suspect an injury, just in case an injury is discovered after the deadline expires.

As with any legal process, make sure you notify your supervisor in writing. Even if you give verbal notification first, a written follow-up notification will provide an official record. The sooner you do this, the more details you will be able to recall.

Your employer probably will give you an official claim form as part of the workers’ compensation claim process. But if not, you should request one from the workers’ compensation board of your state. Generally, you will need to provide the following information on your workers comp claim form:

  1. Type of injury and affected areas of the body;
  2. Date, time, and location of injury;
  3. Parties involved in the accident;
  4. How the accident occurred; and
  5. Any medical treatment you have received

Workers’ Comp Claim Process: Employers’ Responsibilities

Employers that are required by law to provide workers’ comp coverage face the prospect of fines, criminal charges, and lawsuits if they fail to do so. Also, employers may not retaliate against a worker who claims workers’ comp. Therefore, employers have strong incentives to comply with the law and complete all valid claims.

Usually, your employer will file your claim with its insurer and the state workers’ comp board office. After your claim is evaluated by the insurer, an administrator will notify you about whether your claim has been accepted and the amount of benefits to which you are entitled.

After the Claim

Most of your involvement with the workers’ compensation claim process is complete after filling out the necessary paperwork. But you still want to follow up on your claim and make sure you keep detailed records. For instance, you may want to keep a journal of how the injury affects your work and day-to-day activities. Also, be sure to keep receipts for out-of-pocket expenses and proof of any other hardships caused by the injury.

If your claim is rejected, you will have the opportunity to appeal in most cases.

If my deposit with PC Financial has more than $100,000, CDIC stated that the excess is not insured since the insurance covers only up to $100,000. Would CIBC step in, if PC Financial goes under, and

takes over the uninsured amount as not having been a lost on my part. Please reply ASAP. I’m only a lurker who happened to stumble on your website hoping I’ll get an answer from you guys. I’ve inquired from CIBC ombudsman, PC Financial customer care, PC financial people at Loblaws pavilion, etc. but none can give me an answer. Turning to you for an answer is my last resort for now.

Short answer: NO.

CDIC covers bank accounts in Canada. Each account is covered up to $100,000.00. That’s it! If PC Financial went under CDIC would be the entity covering your PC Financial deposit, up to $100,000.00. For that matter, if CIBC went under CDIC would be the entity covering any CIBC deposit account , again up to $100,000.00.

There are ways round this — accounts held individually are separate from accounts held jointly. For more detailed info see this link to CIDC’s website..

And from the latest (January 2013) privacy policy: “. to your PC Financial personal banking products. which are provided by the direct banking division of CIBC . “.

One would assume if PC Financial was in trouble and CIBC would take over . but another institution could also take over . and keep in mind what assume means . lol.

Being proactive, I would consider not going over 90,000 in any CDIC institution and find other CDIC high interest institutions (only if you are comfortable with them) to deal with as well or a Credit Union as they are usually unlimited. Take a look at what your province CU’s have to offer, Winnipeg CU’s as well.

Also keep in mind that some CU’s (BC for sure) offer insurance on US dollar accounts while CDIC does NOT.

Depending on how many accounts you have at PC like savings, chequing, TFSA, RRSP etc. Sometimes they say that a joint account may be covered for 100000 and a TFSA for another 100000 etc. . something you need to verify on the CDIC site.

Umm, if you’re suggesting deposit insurance for PC Financial and CIBC is insured separately, you are wholly incorrect. (Edit: In short, Greg’s answer is mostly correct but I seek to add some additional clarity with this response. kanaka’s response is the incorrect one to which I was referring.)

PC Financial operates simply as a “branch transit” of CIBC. If you have accounts in the same ownership (i.e., sole with same Social Insurance Number – not joint with one and sole with another) with both companies, the CDIC deposit limits would be the same and I believe CIBC’s and PCF’s deposit insurance disclosure pages on their websites reflect this.

I just wanted to clarify this as this is an important distinction that must be spread incorrectly.

That said, deposits with a “Big 5” bank like CIBC really don’t need deposit insurance. The whole deposit insurance scheme is reassurance we don’t really need and meant for the smaller institutions. If CIBC had failed completely, the world and Canada would be in a very sorry state, everyone would’ve already rushed to traditional safe havens like gold and mattresses and we’d all be building underground bunkers and protecting our personal property with various traditional means, if you know what I mean. Thanks. I only put this in because I recalled looking at CDIC in regards to mergers. I dont use PC. I did not realize there was a disclaimer. I stand corrected.

My point remains:
